Joey McIntyre Interview with Las Vegas Review-Journal

Here is an interview with Joey from The Las Vegas Review-Journal

I bet some of you think New Kids on the Block is just a namby-pamby boy band. Well, guess what. They're from Boston, and Boston guys are macho men, and so is New Kid Joey McIntyre.

This weekend, Joey begins a singing residency at the Palms lounge, along with songwriting friend Emanuel Kiriakou.

And when they hang out, this is how manly they sound:

Joey says the New York Jets' victory over the New England Patriots was a hard loss, especially since the Jets did so much trash talking.

"Buncha punks," Joey says of the Jets.

"That big tight end -- that moose of a guy for the Patriots -- he dropped the ball. That should have been 7 points instead of 3 points. That changed the game right away. And then ..."

I tell both Joey and Eman I think Pittsburgh will lose the Super Bowl.

"You're talking to a Pittsburgher, bro," Eman flexes, sounding way more intimidating than I expected.

Anyway, Joey and Eman are in a good mood (no matter how much I rag on their football teams), so let's talk about their new Palms gig.

"This whole show is about taking the piss out of each other, basically. That's the plot. The subplot is the music," Joey says.

"We did Eminem and Rihanna's song, 'Love the Way You Lie.' We rapped to each other," Joey says. "The crowd loved it."

They have also sung Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" as a duet. And, naturally, Joey sings some New Kids music, and the pair do songs they've worked on together.

Eman is a busy multi-instrumentalist and an accomplished producer in Los Angeles. He has produced or written songs for Whitney Houston, David Archuleta, Nick Lachey, Clay Aiken, Taylor Hicks and Ashley Tisdale.

Eman and Joey put out a live album several years ago, and they still dig each other's chemistry. They say they're wiser and calmer, with age.

"For a while, I wore the title of (Expletive) With A Heart of Gold.' It was very fitting," Joey says.

"Now, he's just got a heart of gold," Eman says and laughs, busting Joey's chops. "He was never a (expletive) -- all the time. He just had his moments."

Joey used to have a chip on his shoulder, for being the youngest of nine siblings and the youngest New Kid. A long time ago, his approach to working with others was, "These are my crayons, and this is how I want to do it," he says.

But Joey and Eman became parents and mellowed out.

"Having kids definitely grounds you," Joey says. "Also, you get a lot more done when you're a little bit more agreeable."

Eman has experienced shocking sensations with Joey. About eight years ago, they performed New Kids' "Please Don't Go Girl" ballad at the New Orleans House of Blues for the first time, followed by "insane screaming" from fans.

"The eruption scared the (expletive) out of me. I messed up the guitar, because it scared me," Eman says.

These two manly men have been looking to do something like this Palms residency for a while.

"I don't think we're gonna blow it, because we'll be the first to stop a song and say, 'We're blowing it, stop the song,' " Joey says.

They stopped a song in New York recently. It was their first onstage gig together in years. And Eman had decided to start playing Journey's "Faithfully."

However, Eman then realized he didn't know the words.

"It was a train wreck!" Joey says, laughing. "Eman wanted to introduce a whole new storyline -- the second song! -- into the show, eight years after we hadn't performed."

But Joey had his back.

"I had to go along with him," Joey says, "because I didn't want to break his heart."

Isn't that sweet?

They vow to know all the songs they'll play at the Palms.

"This is like the Super Bowl, as far as two-man shows in a room like this at the Palms," Joey says.

It's always about football metaphors, isn't it?

Joey McIntyre Interview with Las Vegas Weekly:

Here is an interview with Joey from Las Vegas Weekly:

Chatting with Joey McIntyre

Oh oh oh oh oh. The right stuff!

Whew. Now that we have the required New Kids on the Block song reference out of the way, have you ever wondered what Joey McIntyre is up to these days? Did you know he has two kids and one on the way—or that his 3-year-old is a fan of King Kong? Do you care what McIntyre thought about Black Swan? Well, now that you’re thinking about those things, check out our interview with the pop icon, who answers all that and more.

You have a new weekly show called One Too Many at Midnight debuting at the Lounge inside the Palms this Saturday. You’ve performed this before, just not in Vegas, right?

The show isn’t totally new. My buddy Eman(uel Kiriakou, singer/songwriter) and I did this tour a long time ago—years and years ago. Recently we decided, hey, let’s find some time to do it again. So, we did a show last fall in New York, a couple in San Fran. That ended up on YouTube and our friend at the Palms, Zoe Thrall, who runs the studio and is good friends with us, saw it and thought it was awesome. She thought it was a good fit for the Lounge. It all came together on its own.

The press release says you might be leading the audience in a sing-a-long of a Taylor Swift song. Sounds fun.

Yes, the audience is part of the show sometimes. It’s a lot of fun.

I’m intrigued. Tell me more.

It’s very irreverent. It has covers, some of my stuff, a New Kid song here or there. It’s at midnight, that tells you a little about what it’s like. It’s fun. We take it seriously, of course. We want to sing great songs and give good interpretations of them, but there are also times where we just talk a lot of trash to each other.

Do you think Las Vegas is a good fit for the show?

I think a show can work anywhere if it’s done honestly, with integrity, and with confidence. Eman and I love what we do, so … In terms of Vegas, I think it does have a throwback essence to it. It’s not a Rat-Pack thing at all—that’s the golden goose, everyone tries to re-create that, and you can’t because they’re legends. Still, they performed in small rooms. People got to see Frank and Dean and Sammy up close, and I know Dean would play until 2 or 3 in the morning for the people that worked there. That’s really cool. So at least we can share that intimate setting.

Was figuring out what songs to perform difficult?

You just have to try out different things. We’d decide, oh, we need a certain up-tempo right here. We do a Taylor Swift song, “You Belong With Me.” I don’t know if there’s another song that’s played more. It’s a great song, a modern-day standard. We tried to pick things that were out of the box. That’s what this kind of show is all about: getting out of your comfort zone. You just go for it and see what works. There are no rules.

Has Taylor or any of the other artists you cover heard you cover their songs?

Hah. I don’t think so. (Laughs) Maybe we’ll have to get better recorded versions to show ‘em, but so far no messages from Bono.

How about you? You’ve surely been on the receiving end of hearing another artist cover your work, right?

I think Barenaked Ladies did a New Kids medley. Remember Faith No More? I remember a long time ago they did “Right Stuff.” It’s fun to be a part of pop history. Anytime you can be referenced in that respect it can be cool.

Speaking of, this summer you’ll be busy with the New Kids on the Block-Backstreet Boys tour. What is it like going from an intimate setting like the Lounge to big arenas?

It’s awesome. It’s the best of both worlds. There’s nothing like having a big arena with the stage and the lights and the production value. It’s so big. You can’t replace that, but I live for the intimate moments. I think that’s where you get the most out of it. It’s kind of magical.

What’s the dynamic of that tour like?

It’s very cool. We get along great, that’s the best part. I never would have thought we would have toured together, so it’s an awesome opportunity. We both have great fans and these two acts had a big part in pop history. It’s a blessing.

What is your life like outside of performing?

My 3-year-old and 1-year-old. Being a dad. Having a family. Taking care of stuff around the house. I’m kind of hands-on in that way. I want to be involved as much as possible. I travel a lot. So I want to be at home if possible.

What are your kids into?

My 3-year-old loves Mary Poppins. He also loves King Kong, which is kind of weird. We’re trying to avoid him seeing the stuff that’s too violent. The first musical he’s liked is Singing in the Rain, and he’s into all the Disney movies and whatnot.

You’re about to have a third child this May. That’s a lot of young kids all at once.

Eh. My father had eight kids by the time he was my age. Nowadays people are having kids into their 40s. My wife will have three kids before she’s 33. It’s nice to get them out of the way, so to speak. Plus, they’re all close together in age, so they can have fun together. It’s the greatest blessing in the world.

So, do you want eight kids?

I don’t know about that. Three is the new nine.

What music are you currently listening to?

I dig a lot of current music. I lot of singer/songwriters. Kelly Clarkson, I think she’s a great singer. Mary J. Blige. I love the records that Katy Perry makes. I think they’re fun and they have good melodies. Then I like the standard stuff—Frank, Nat King Cole. There’s a lot of that in my iPod. There’s some U2. A little bit of everything, I guess.

Any surprises?

Hmm. I can’t think of any. One of these days I am going to get into classical music, though.

Are you a reader?

Right now I’m reading The Best and the Brightest. It’s about Vietnam and how the best and brightest screwed it up. It’s fascinating and well written. It’s nice to learn and do research on something. Good to keep the brain active, but I’m not a voracious reader. My wife reads a lot of books. She kind of gives me the heads up.

What about television or movies?

I don’t watch a lot of TV. I saw a couple movies recently, though. This time around I saw The Fighter, Black Swan, The Social Network. I tried to see as many award-nominees as possible. I want to see The King’s Speech next.

What’d you think of them?

I think Christian Bale is awesome in The Fighter. As for Black Swan, I didn’t know it was going be this psychological horror show, so I was taken aback by that. It was uneasy to watch, which I guess is the point, but it was a little much for me. I didn’t really dig it that much. Social Network was great. I can’t believe that dude (Andrew Garfield) is going to be the next Spider-man. Those English and Scottish know how to do accents. His accent was crazy.

Can you do any accents?

My whole life is trying not to have a Boston accent. (Laughs)

Joey McIntyre Interview with "Citys Best"

Here is an interview with Joey from Citys Best

New Kid Off the Strip: Joey McIntyre at the Palms

Feb 3rd 2011 6:00PM / by Josh Bell

New Kids on the Block, the original boy band, catapulted Joey McIntyre to international superstardom. After the group disbanded in 1994, he embarked on a solo career (scoring his own hit single "Stay the Same" in 1999) and has performed on Broadway and acted in movies and TV. The New Kids reunited in 2008 and have a big summer tour coming up this year with the Backstreet Boys, but Joey still finds time to work on his own material. He and longtime collaborator Emanuel Kiriakou will be performing a freewheeling acoustic show at the Palms every Saturday in February. Here's what Joey had to say about his latest project.

What can people expect from your show at the Palms?
It's an intimate setting, and it's just me and my buddy on guitar, so there's a lot of freedom in that. The show isn't necessarily set in stone, and we like when things kind of take us off in different directions, which can cause a few train wrecks, but that's entertaining as well. Me and my buddy Eman have written a lot of music together for my solo career. We're going to sing a few New Kids songs, and then after that, we just like to sing good pop songs that we think are kind of modern-day standards, and just see where it takes us.

What are some of your favorite covers that you feature in the show?
We like to mix it up. For instance, last fall we did a Taylor Swift song, "You Belong With Me." I didn't change any of the pronouns from "he" to "she" -- I just went for it. Up until the second before we started -- he's vamping on his guitar, waiting for me to come in, and I'm like, "I can't believe I'm going to do this." But it was a blast, and the crowd loved it. So I think that's going to be a staple of our show from now on. But we also do "One" by U2, which is an amazing song, and I love singing that song. A little George Michael -- it never hurts, because it's just fun pop, and it's usually a great pace and has a lot of energy.

Can you offer any preview about what's coming up on the summer New Kids/Backstreet Boys tour?
Well, we're starting to talk about it. The idea is that it's one big show, one big ride. It's not just two acts, one goes on and then the other one goes on. We'd like to start the show together and end the show together and maybe do some stuff in between. All the while, each group does their hits. I know the audience wants to see Backstreet Boys sing "I Want It That Way" and their songs, and same with the New Kids. So we're not going to really mash up the big hits, but I think maybe we'll have some new music, and maybe we'll find a couple of great songs that we can sing together.

What are your favorite things to do and places to go in Vegas?
I checked out Rao's, which is amazing. That was delicious. You wonder if they can duplicate -- although I've never been to the one in New York, but it's just like, how do you take something good and then make it bigger? For some reason, I just thought, it's a big restaurant -- it's not huge, but it's a lot of people -- and how is every meal going to be just as special? But it was a great, delicious meal, and the vibe is really cool. I love going to the Bellagio. The restaurant Olives there kind of has a Boston connection for me, because Todd English had that restaurant in Boston. And it's got this great balcony view. To me, it's the best seat in the house for the fountain [show].

Joey McIntyre Talks Palms Residency, NKOTBSB and More

This February, he's got a ton of tricks up his sleeve for his Las Vegas residency at The Lounge at The Palms, "One Too Many At Midnight". Alongside longtime collaborator Eman, McIntyre will perform an intimate, stripped-down acoustic set of solo material, New Kids On The Block favorites, modern covers, and so much more. If there's one thread through the diverse setlist, it's McIntyre's explosive stage presence, endless charisma, and entrancing voice. He's an inimitable, inspiring, and incredible pop performer that can do anything, and these gigs shows that. Nodding to Frank Sinatra, McIntyre's got a classy, clever show in store, and it's not to be missed.

Over cheeseburgers at a chic Beverly Hills spot high above the city, Joey McIntyre spoke to ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino about the Las Vegas shows, his upcoming NKOTBSB tour, playing acoustic, taking a cue from Frank Sinatra, and so much more.

When did you come up with the idea for this Las Vegas residency at The Lounge at The Palms?

Well, I never really took putting a show together seriously [Laugh]. When I thought of putting a one-man show together, I figured it would be on Broadway or more of a theater piece. I've always got ideas swimming in my head. I'm working on this other project that's more of a traditional one-man show. Then, Eman and I have been spending time together because we both have kids who are the same age and we're buddies. It's that age-old feeling where you're like, "Let's get the band back together." Our band is just two people. He's on guitar, and it's an acoustic thing. We made this happen almost eight or nine years ago when we touring and promoting an album. We realized that what we did and how we reacted to each other and the crowd really worked well. There's a lot of freedom in terms of where you can go when it's acoustic. You can't have that freedom if you don't have someone like Eman who's an amazing musician. He loves to do it, and he also loves the challenge of not knowing where to go and what's coming next as a musician and as a performer. We really love doing that. We decided to do a couple shows. We did two shows in New York last October at Joe's Pub [The Joseph Papp Public Theater]. It's this cool little cabaret place. I actually saw Norah Jones there before she blew up. We also did one show in San Francisco as well. It was a blast! It had been so long but we wanted to do it again. For the last show, we went on at midnight and played until two in the morning. It was very intimate and up close and personal. There's an anything goes feeling. What you see is what you get. We're not holding anything back. There are poignant moments. There are nice moments. There are sweet moments, but there are very irreverent, crazy moments as well. All of that stuff was on YouTube. A friend of ours at The Palms saw the stuff and said, "This is perfect for this lounge we have!" A week later, we flew into Vegas, talked to them, and decided to try this out. It's perfect for what we do. The room has about 200 seats. It's right off the lobby. It's old school, but in a new way. It's at The Palms, which is a very young hip spot. It's cool to play at a place like that in Vegas.

Is it particularly fun to have no boundaries on stage like this?

It's amazing! We live for those moments that happen on their own. Our job is to recreate them every night as if they're happening for the first time but we know every show has moments of their own that just happen. That's the beauty of having the freedom we have. We can just flow off each other.

What's the set list like?

I'm doing something from all of my albums. I'm doing some New Kids On The Block songs. We want to do some cool covers and unexpected songs. We actually did Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me." I didn't change the words either [Laughs]. We want to do great songs. When Frank Sinatra did covers, they were covers of great songs and current songs at the time. They did songs that were great at the time. We want to do current standards.

Does playing acoustic allow the crowd to get closer to you?

If you're willing to unplug, it definitely says that you're confident in your talents and people don't get to see that very often. You see beyond it. I only did six dates for Here We Go Again. It was great, and it was intense. That's a big operation. This is more compact.

Did you see any shows like this as a kid that were particularly inspiring?

I think there's a connection to live theater. It's great when you've got all the bells and whistles and pyro in the stadiums or arenas, but there's also nothing like the magic of just a voice and one instrument. The clarity of that is really fun.

You've got the big arena show coming up with NOTBSB.

I'm really having it all [Laughs].

Was the chemistry instant between all of you guys [New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys]?

It was! We're having a blast. We've all been doing it for awhile, and we know it's a great opportunity. You can have a good time. We did the AMA's together and New Years Eve. It's going to be fun!

Karson and Kennedy Talk About Fenway Show Announcement

Boston morning show Karson and Kennedy (from Mix 104.1) talk about how the Fenway press conference with the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys went:
