Hear the World Interview with Joey McIntyre

Hear the World posted an interview with Joey:

How did you get involved with the issue of hearing loss?
Well, a few months back, probably about six months, my wife and I did a piece in People magazine and decided to tell whoever wanted to listen that we have a son who was born with hearing loss. Just like any regular family, we are simply trying to figure it out and do the right thing for our son. Since then, a lot of great organizations have asked me to talk to them and share my story. I’m certainly not an expert, but I think by talking about it and sharing our experiences it can shed some light on the issue and help some families out there that really don’t know how to deal with it or what to do next. We were certainly in that position, and we were lucky enough to have good friends and good people around us to point us in the right direction and tell us that, you know, there is hope and there are plenty of things that can be done for your son or daughter.

How is your son doing?
He’s great. My son is thirteen months old and he’s the happiest kid in the world. You know, loves to eat and gets crazy and cranky when the banana does not come fast enough to his plate, like any thirteen-month-old, but he has had hearing aids in his ears since he was a month old, so he’s very used to it. That’s another thing, the simple fact of having them in his ears, it’s not foreign to him and that’s part of the early detection as well. They are a huge help; he is hearing like a normal thirteen-month-old, and that’s amazing given that he was born with severe hearing loss. There’s moderate, severe and profound. Profound is pretty much completely deaf. So, for him to have severe hearing loss and to hear as well as he does is really cool.

That’s great. You said you went to People magazine or they came to you, and you told your story. When people read that story or hear about it, what do you want them to take away from it?
I think anytime you open up and share your experiences, you never know how it’s going to affect people. It really has a lot of value, you know, one thing you say could move a great many people. As I said, when we first found out that our son was born with hearing loss, we were, you feel like you can’t breathe, you know, it’s just overwhelming … you’re in shock and lots of different thoughts run through your head. Like how’s he going to live, what’s he going to do, is he going to have the same opportunities as everybody else, little things, you know. The thing is kids don’t listen to you anyways so (laughs), but if he’s in danger and I want to call to him, he might not hear me. Everything you can imagine goes through your mind. And that was all quieted when someone said that people can be born with severe hearing loss and still have a normal life. And there are lots of different routes. Some parents, even with all the technology available today, say no to hearing aids and cochlear implants and operations, because that’s the way their child was born, and I can totally relate to that. It’s part of the world of hearing loss so to speak, and it’s just one option and I think what I have learned is that there are many different routes for a life with hearing loss and every one is okay.

You’re being honored with the Hear the World Award. How does that feel?
Oh, it feels great. I really didn’t do much to earn these awards. I won another award called The Annie Award which is named after John Glenn’s wife, Senator John Glenn, the astronaut. His wife had hearing loss, so they have an award named after her, and I realize that I have a story and it helps people. I have some celebrity, and that helps raise awareness. There are of course amazing scientists and doctors and lay people involved in the organization, raising awareness, telling people about hearing loss, they’re really doing the work and if I can get up and tell my story and that helps the cause, then that’s great.

You’ve got an upcoming tour. How do you have time to do all these things?
Yeah, I’ve got two little boys, and another baby on the way in May and the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block are going on tour in May as well, so I’m going to be a real popular husband in my house when I’m having fun on the road, and my wife’s going to have her hands full! But she’s been more or less saying ‘get out of the house, it’s fine,’ you know? That’s the big secret … most of the time the moms and the wives say ‘scram, let me deal with this.’ But obviously we’re incredibly blessed that we have two healthy kids and another one on the way; it’s going to be busy! But you’ve gotta bring home the bacon, and that’s what I do for a living, so.

What can the fans expect on this tour?
The New Kids on the Block have been back together for a couple of years now and we’ve just been so blessed to be able to do a bunch of tours. We try to do something different on every tour and we really have the best fans in the world, and I know a lot of bands say that, but we believe it and we have a great relationship with them and we just want to bring something new to the table every time, so this time we’re touring with another band, one of the biggest groups in Pop history. The two fan bases coming together is awesome, but the best thing about it is that both groups really get along, there’s a lot of mutual respect and we just want to make it the best tour that we’ve been involved with. We’re doing 50 dates in the USA alone. It’s a big arena tour and it’s going to be interesting to figure out how to put together a show with, thankfully, 20 hit records between the two groups. It’s going to be fun.

What’s your favorite memory from being on the road?
Well, the first time around, that was a while ago so ... the madness sticks out more, and that’s okay, it was crazy. Our fans were so young and they just wanted to rip you to pieces and that’s fun for a while, but it gets kind of insane. But that whole experience, the downtime in-between, being able to travel around the world and see things that normally you just see in a history book in high school, and you’re actually in those places experiencing it first-hand, is such a blessing and such a gift. But to be able to come back as an adult and sing, keeping it fresh and interesting, and reliving everything, is really cool.

Let me see what else… I heard your eldest is really looking forward to the new family member. Can you tell us about it?
Yeah, my eldest son, Griffin, he’s three, and it’s his baby in mommy’s tummy. He’s thrilled. We are thinking about names … he’s trying to figure out a name … he comes up with crazy names like Oneapheaus. I don’t know where that came from, but I don’t think we’re going to name the baby Oneapheaus. But it’s great. It’s the biggest, greatest blessing in the world, having kids. It’s the most challenging, but also the most rewarding.

Joey McIntyre's Hear the World PSA and Interview

People.com has posted an interview with Joey in which he talks about Hear the World, his son Rhys and his third baby due in May. They also have posted a video of his PSA for Hear the World.

Update: Video has been deleted, does anyone have it saved?

Here is the article:

Hearing loss is the number one birth defect in the United States, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics — and Joey McIntyre is lending his time to encourage parents to have their children’s hearing tested early on.

The New Kids on the Block member has taped a public service announcement for Hear the World, a global initiative launched by hearing instrument manufacturer Phonak to raise awareness about the importance of hearing and the consequences of hearing loss.

Son Rhys was born with severe hearing loss in Dec. 2009, and McIntyre soon went public with his family’s journey in an effort to educate about the importance of early diagnosis.

“As a musician, music – and the ability to hear it – is the cornerstone of my life, so when my son was diagnosed with severe hearing loss, I wasn’t sure how to handle it,” explains McIntyre.

“Thankfully, because of today’s advanced hearing aid technology, I don’t have to worry about my son missing a beat. That is why I am honored to join Hear the World in their mission to educate the public about hearing loss and the solutions available to treat it.”

We spoke to McIntyre, 38, about his participation in the campaign — and his baby on the way in May!

Obviously this is a cause close to your heart — can you tell us a little about why you decided to get involved with Hear the World?

Anything I can do for the hearing loss community is a privilege. I hope I can help by telling our story. When you go through something like this, you can feel very helpless and alone, but there is so much out there to get you through it all and lead you to a path that is right for your child.

Last we knew, you and Barrett were working with speech and auditory therapists with Rhys, using hearing aids and seeing a response. You were still up in the air about cochlear implants. What are the latest developments with how you’re choosing to proceed with handling Rhys’ hearing loss?

Right now Rhys is doing great with regular hearing aids. The tests that they have for children his age tell us that he is on par (and in some cases ahead) with kids with normal hearing. It is a process and there’s more to learn, but right now we think he will not need cochlear implants.

Could you fill us in on Griffin, 3, and 15-month-old Rhys’ newest milestones?

Oh my! So many things. Every minute there’s an adventure or a quote or an accident … or a tantrum (working on those). But it is the best thing in the world. Nothing is even close.

You have a busy summer coming up — baby no. 3 is arriving in May and you’re set to tour with NKOTB and the Backstreet Boys. Do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl? Will Barrett and the kids be joining you on the road?

We aren’t telling the sex of the baby … not even to PEOPLE.com. :)

Yes, we kid a lot that I’m outta here on a rock n’ roll tour while my wife is home with three kids under 3 years old. But it’s bittersweet for me. I think I’ll be able be there for the birth … HOPEFULLY!!! And I think the two oldest and my wife will be able to come out on the road for a weekend here and there.

Improper Bostonian's interview with Donnie Wahlberg

The Improper Bostonian did an interview with Donnie. Here is the article:

Donnie Wahlberg
The actor and pop star talks about celebrity, Tom Selleck’s mustache and getting cast as a cop.

BY JONATHAN SOROFF

Multi-hyphenate Donnie Wahlberg, 41, was born and raised in Dorchester and rocketed to superstardom as the bad-boy member of the band New Kids on the Block. After launching his brother Mark’s career as a rapper and then an actor, Donnie went on to distinguish himself as an actor and producer. He has appeared on the big screen in the Saw films, Righteous Kill, The Sixth Sense, Southie and Ransom, and on TV in the critically lauded Boomtown and Band of Brothers. He’s currently starring in the CBS police drama Blue Bloods and was instrumental in reforming NKOTB, which will tour this summer. He lives in New York.

Jonathan Soroff: So is your costar Tom Selleck keeping his ’stache?
Donnie Wahlberg: My only answer to that is that I’m trying to develop an iconic feature of my own. I’m working on it.

You’ve got the shaved head thing going.
Yeah, but so does Michael Chiklis. I’m thinking about maybe one sideburn. Or a unibrow. Or a Friar Tuck haircut.

How did you lose your Boston accent?
I brought my older brother Jim on tour right after he quit smoking and drinking. He had to be the most angry, obnoxious person I’d been around in my life, and I realized I sounded like that sometimes. So I had to change it. I realized that if I sounded anything like my brother, I was screwed.

Thing you miss most about Boston?
I miss the air. There’s a certain energy there that doesn’t exist anywhere else. I can feel it the second the plane touches down and they open the door. I can smell it.

If you could only watch one Boston team for the rest of your life, which would it be?
You’re an asshole. [Laughs.] That’s just wrong. I guess I’ll go with the New England Revolution, because if you think you’re going to get me to choose between the Celtics, the Red Sox, the Patriots and the Bruins, you’re absolutely out of your mind.

Biggest payday you ever had?
I don’t remember the biggest paycheck I ever got, but I do remember the biggest tax check I ever had to deliver. It was seven figures. It was mind-boggling. I’d probably never seen a check for more than a few thousand and, all of a sudden, I was giving one away with seven figures on it. Probably one of the most painful days of my life.

Was your performance in the first six minutes of The Sixth Sense unfairly overlooked?
I’m not really doing this to win awards. I get stopped on the street every single day by people who say they were amazed that was me in that scene. That’s reward enough.

Are the Academy Awards as boring to go to as they are to watch?
I’ve never gone. I’d only go if I was nominated or Mark was and he took me with him. He’s been nominated for playing a tough guy from Boston before, so maybe he needs to play a tough guy from somewhere else.

You always get cast as a cop. Why?
Every actor plays a cop at least 25 times in their career if they have a long career.

Could you do the job?
The last two times I’ve played one, the technical advisors, who were two of the best cops in their respective cities, both told me I’d make a great cop. I consider that high praise. So it’s pretty cool, and it’s become a thing for me on set to try and figure out what they’re going to tell me before they do—like leaving a weapon outside of an interrogation room, or how to stand when someone may be threatening. It’s interesting as an actor how much of that is instinctive, and I love when the technical advisor says, “How’d you know to do it that way?”

Most bizarre fan encounter?
I just remember this one fan who always used to show up and give us these clearly poisonous cupcakes. It was pretty scary.

What’s up with the Funky Bunch?
They’re actually working together in Boston, working on some new stuff, recording.

Career achievement you’re most proud of?
Helping launch my brother Mark’s career. When I think about the alternatives… I actually get chills thinking about what might’ve been if I hadn’t put him in a recording studio all those years ago. I can’t help but imagine I’d be visiting him in prison somewhere.

Is there anyone you’d never work with again?
I guess Jamie Kelly, the kid who quit New Kids. [Laughs.] Seriously? No. I’ve learned something from everyone I’ve ever worked with, even if it was learning what not to do.

Do you let your kids watch the Saw movies?
Sure. My oldest son has the poster in his bedroom. When Saw II came out, he was the most popular kid in high school because of that.

When are you and Mark going to star in a movie together?
No idea. But maybe someday, I hope.

Most annoying part of being a celebrity?
There’s always that point when you’re feeling at your lowest, most vulnerable or grumpiest, and it never fails that at that exact moment someone recognizes me.

Best thing you ever read about yourself in a tabloid?
That I almost died in a car wreck. The headline was this sensational “Donnie Wahlberg Nearly Dies in a Car Crash!” The article said I almost fell asleep at the wheel. I guess the reasoning was that because something almost happened, a whole chain reaction of almost disasters almost took place. The best part was that some reality show about celebrity near-misses or near-death experiences wanted me to do an episode about this non-incident.

Thing your fans would be most surprised to know about you?
They know everything about me. But if I had to guess, I’d say they probably don’t know how shy I am deep down inside.

What’s going to come first: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Emmy or Oscar nomination?
If any of that happened, I’d be very, very proud, but I don’t think about that stuff. If I spent my time thinking about things that might happen in the future, I’m missing out on what’s happening right now. That’s one of the lessons I’ve learned getting a second chance in the music business. I’m enjoying it all too much to focus on the maybes.

If I’d told you five years ago that you’d be touring with the New Kids again, what would you have said?
I would have told you you were out of your mind. The irony of that is that I was one of the ring-leaders in making it happen. If you’d told me that I’d be the one who was corralling everybody and putting the tour together, I would have said you were on crack. And if you’d told me we’d be playing Fenway, I would have said, “Where? Outside on Yawkey Way by the Sausage Guy?”

How do you account for the enduring appeal?
I can’t explain it, but I can say that it’s different. It’s better. For us, and for the fans, and for everyone involved, it’s like being able to go back to your high school days with what we know now. We get to experience things that we haven’t in years, but with the perspective of adults. It’s beyond description. It’s a very profound, powerful experience. I think the fans are having the time of their lives and so are we. I mean, listen: I’m finishing up eight months of doing Blue Bloods, and anyone in the acting field can tell you there’s no tougher grind. So to be looking forward to a break when I’ll be playing 50 cities in two months, it has to be the most incredible experience in the world.

Weirdest part of being a teen idol?
Two things: Not having any privacy at all, and my run-ins with the media. I didn’t get it. Which is one of the nice things about getting to do it over again. There were times when I was 19 years old when I thought everybody outside my front door either wanted to rip my clothes off or kill me, and it takes some growing up to realize that’s not the case.

Weirdest piece of NKOTB memorabilia?
A friend of mine gave me a whole box of New Kids trading cards. They’re sitting on my desk. I find it kind of mind-boggling. I can’t really wrap my head around anyone wanting New Kids trading cards. When I was a kid, we got in trouble for stealing Wacky Pack cards, and when I look over at that box, I think, “I wouldn’t buy those. I wouldn’t even steal those.” They just make me scratch my head.

How do you survive being a teen idol?
It’s not a life or death situation. It’s a lot of fun. When the rollercoaster hits the bottom of the hill you have to find something else to keep you occupied. I think the problem for teen idols is when the ride ends and you’re 18 or 20 years old, you still have 60 years ahead of you, and you’re thinking, “What the hell am I going to do to match that rush?” You have to reinvent yourself. And I like being able to walk out my front door in peace or go to the supermarket with my son and not have people taking my picture.

Jordan Knight Teases Future NKOTBSB Tracks

MTV Newsroom interviewed Jordan about his new solo music and NKOTBSB. Here is the article below:

Jordan Knight Teases Future NKOTBSB Tracks

Jordan Knight may be hustling to get the word out about his catchy new single, "Let's Go Higher" and new solo album Unfinished (which is due in May), but the New Kid is also gearing up for a colossal summer tour courtesy of the epic collaboration between NKOTB and the Backstreet Boys.

The singer spoke to MTV News and he says that the NKOTBSB track "Turn Out The Lights" (which was teased a few months back) is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential collaborations between the two legendary groups.

"Yes you will see that. We recorded song with them and record probably a couple more songs with them so that is on the horizon also," he shared before spilling a few more details about "Turn Out The Lights." "The song was produced by Eman, who's actually a good friend of Joe's. It was written by Claude Kelly. So they came up with a pop smash for NKOTBSB and it sounds really great."

Jordan also revealed some more details about the tour itself, which he dubs a "boy band extravaganza." "It's unbelievable really," he continued. "I'm in awe of the whole thing."

"We're gonna have good production value," he further teased. "The stage is going to be incredible. All the seats in the arenas are pretty much good seats because the stage spans from front to back."

As for the set list, all you have to do is think back to their AMAs performance last year. "It's not, 'Who goes on first?' It's gonna be more like we come out together, we make a huge splash. It's gonna be non-stop back and forth action," he shared. "Were really gonna play off each other."

Jordan Knight Launches His Own Record Label

According to Contact Music, Jordan will be releasing his album on his own label: "JK Music". Here is the article:

New Kids Star Launches Record Label

New Kids On The Block star Jordan Knight can add music mogul to his resume after launching his own record label.

The pop star will debut his new solo single Let's Go Higher on the imprint Jk Music. The label will also back Knight's upcoming album Unfinished.

The label is a joint venture between Knight and Mass Appeal Entertainment boss/producer Marcus Siskind, who has previously worked with the likes of Backstreet Boys, Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah.

Here is another article from Market Wire which goes into more details.

Jordan Knight, Lead Singer of Mega Boy Band New Kids on the Block, Launches His Own Label Imprint, JK Music, With Debut of New Solo Single, "Let's Go Higher," Now Available on iTunes "Unfinished," Knight's First Solo Album in Nearly Five Years, Set for May 3rd Release Through Joint Venture With JK Music and Mass Appeal Entertainment, Distributed Through eOne Music

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - March 1, 2011) - Jordan Knight launches his own label imprint, JK Music, with the release of "Let's Go Higher," the first single from the singer-songwriter's forthcoming album, "Unfinished," available beginning today on the iTunes Music Store. Fans can stream the track on Knight's official website (www.jordanknight.com).

"Let's Go Higher," an infectious, uptempo, pop smash written by hit songwriter Colby O'Donis (Lady Gaga, Akon), was co-produced and arranged by Knight and fellow Boston based music producer Marcus Siskind. Knight also recruited and collaborated with many highly in demand writers and producers in the music industry today. Jonas Jeberg (Pussycat Dolls, Jordin Sparks), JR Hutson (Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild), Nasri Atweh (NKOTB, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber/Jaden Smith), DJ Clinton Sparks and Christian Davis among others lended their talents to Knight's project.

Through a joint venture deal between JK Music and Marcus Siskind of Mass Appeal Entertainment, "Unfinished," Knight's first solo project in nearly five years, will be distributed through eOne Music. The 12-song album will be available on May 3rd along with special version releases featuring bonus songs and single remixes.

Most recognized as the lead singer of New Kids on The Block, Knight was first introduced to fans through the group's self-titled, debut album release in 1986. As a songwriter, he wrote his first Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit song "I'll Be Your Everything" at the age of 17 for singer Tommy Page, which remained on the charts for 14 weeks and became RIAA certified gold. After selling over 80 million albums worldwide through the release of 6 group albums, Knight broke from NKOTB to embark on a successful solo career, which produced 4 Top 40 singles. His critically acclaimed debut self-titled album release in 1999 became RIAA certified gold and produced the Billboard Top 10 single, "Give It To You" which sold over a million copies and was nominated for Best Dance Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. Much to the delight of their loyal fans, Knight and NKOTB reunited in 2007, returning to the charts once again with "The Block," the group's first studio album in 14 years. With the album debuting at #1 on the Billboard Pop Album chart and #2 on the overall Top 200 chart, the group promoted their new release through a sold-out, 48-city worldwide tour.

Following the release of "Unfinished" on May 3rd, Knight will be returning to the road this summer with NKOTB for their highly anticipated co-headlining 41-city tour with the Backstreet Boys, which kicks off on June 2nd in Uncasville, CT at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Black Roots Radio Article on Jordan Knight

Here is an article from Black Roots Radio about Jordan:

Jordan Knight's new single "Let's Go Higher" was released Tuesday (March 1), and it's a chugging club tune about hitting the dance floor with that special someone. The New Kids on the Block singer hooked up with onetime Lady Gaga collaborator Colby O'Donis, who wrote the song with the Knight in mind and felt it was the perfect track to re-launch his solo career.

"I had a track and I really liked this track. I needed a writer to see if they could put some good idea over it," Knight said of another song he had been working on. "I was always talking about Colby O'Donis. He's got a great vibe," he recalled, adding that O'Donis had something else in mind for the pop star.

"He sent [it] and it was produced by him in his studio, so the production wasn't exactly where I wanted it. But I could recognize the song as being a really good song with a great hook and great message," he said. Knight first hooked up with the songwriter a year ago before reworking the track with Marcus Siskind.

"I've been kind of working on a solo record for a year and a half and it just didn't feel like it was all put together," Knight explained. "It all fell together now at a great time."

Knight is soaking up the fun, pop vibe that has taken over mainstream radio and will certainly find its way onto his next album. "Higher" is the lead single off Knight's May solo album release, Unfinished, which drops the same month that New Kids on the Block is set to hit the road with the Backstreet Boys on their highly anticipated joint venture.

"There's a few ballads. It's not ballad heavy. It does represent well the tone of the album," he said. "The tone is definitely upbeat. I think a lot of people thought that I would do mid-tempos — Jordan's the crooner romantic guy — but it's not really that kind of music. I honestly prefer upbeat music. I prefer doing upbeat music. With the New Kids, I loved the ballads. I was all about ballads. I'm not really into ballads anymore," he laughed.

Jordan Knight article from Billboard.com

Here is an article from Billboard.com about Jordan's release of "Let's Go Higher":

New Kids on the Block fans are getting more than a tour from the '80s/'90s pop sensation this spring. Group member Jordan Knight will release a new solo album, "Unfinished," on May 3 (JK Music/Mass Appeal Entertainment/eOne Music), and the singer tells Billboard.com that he's thrilled to get back to his up-tempo pop roots.

There's this idea that when you turn 40, you automatically go to adult contemporary heaven," Knight jokes, "but I want to try and challenge that. My heart has always been in more up-tempo music you can dance to."

Knight -- who premiered his first single, the club-friendly "Let's Go Higher," on Z100 this morning and released it on iTunes, says that "Unfinished" feels like his first real album since his 1999 solo debut, which produced the Top 10 Hot 100 hit "Give It to You." That release was followed by a ballad-leaning EP entitled "The Fix" in 2004, and in 2006 came "Love Songs," a collection of covers that Knight now says never really felt like his own.

"I wasn't in a good place back then. I just went along with everyone else's idea of what I should make, so I hardly even consider it my album," Knight recalls. "With this album I've been pushing my vision since the beginning, so I'm more in the driver's seat than with any other solo project I've done."

Knight says he decided to make a new solo album "about a year and a half ago" and teamed up with Colby O'Donis, who penned "Let's Go Higher" and is otherwise best known for his work on Lady Gaga's breakthrough single, "Just Dance." Knight co-produced the single and tapped a host of up-tempo-leaning producers/songwriters for the rest of the project as well, including Jonas Jeberg (Pussycat Dolls), JR Hutson (Jill Scott), Nasri Atweh (NKOTB, Justin Bieber/Jaden Smith), Clinton Sparks and Christian Davis.

For fans who are worried that "Unfinished" is completely devoid of slow jams, though, "Knight reassures that the set "is definitely not all up-tempo...there's a place in my heart for ballads, too."

As NKOTB prepares to hit the road for its joint tour with the Backstreet Boys later this year, Knight says he's looking forward to the exposure that trek will afford him, and that he may even test out some of his solo material on the NKOTBSB stage. "You'll probably see me do some of the new stuff on our tour, for sure," Knight says, adding that while he probably won't do an official solo tour until his group's road trip wraps up, he'll be making promo appearances and performances in the markets they visit.

The resurgence of NKOTB also means that Knight and his bandmates' personal lives are back in the spotlight. "I just had to block someone on Facebook who was impersonating my wife," Knight laughs. "It does get crazy sometimes, but I've never complained about stopping to give autographs or anything like that." Knight also says he fully supports his brother Jonathan Knight's recent letter to fans, which he sent after '80s star Tiffany inadvertently outed him as gay on television. In the note, Knight said that he's "never hidden his sexuality" but simply chooses not to speak publicly on his private life. "I loved what he said. I thought it was perfect," Knight says.

With "Let's Go Higher" out now, Knight promises that a music video will follow soon, and that fans can look forward to him breaking out a few dance moves in the clip. "I can still cut a rug," Knight says with a laugh. "I probably will bring back some choreography for the video -- that's what the song calls for! -- but it won't be on the level that it was with the "Give It to You," which was like nonstop choreography...and I won't be doing the Dougie."
