Jordan Knight's interview with Entertainment Focus

Jordan did an interview with Entertainment Focus, here is the transcript:

New Kids On The Block and the Backstreet Boys took fans and critics by surprise when they announced they were merging to form supergroup NKOTBSB.

Having spent most of 2011 on the road together on tour, the group is bringing their hit show over the UK next April.

To find out more about what we can expect we called New Kids On The Block singer Jordan Knight and he gave us the lowdown.

How are you today?

I’m pretty good. Can’t complain.

What have you been up to so far?

Today? I’ve done a bunch of interviews. I’ve done some laundry. I did a little exercise, had some coffee. That’s about it.

Sounds like quite a nice day?

Yeah it’s nice and relaxed.

Tell me about NKOTBSB. How did New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys join forces?

It came about from doing a performance with them. They came to one of our shows and ended up performing with us on stage. We just wanted to end our tour with a bang at Radio City Music Hall so we invited them down as special guests. We got such a great response from the fans and more so in the press. There was such a reaction to it; to the fact that two boybands would even get on stage together and sing a song together just for the fun of it. That got such a reaction from press that it couldn’t be denied and we couldn’t get away from it. We started talking about doing a tour because of the response we got.

It’s a genius idea. You don’t see two boybands getting together on stage Did you have reservations about taking the idea forward or did it just feel right?

No it felt really right. They’re really good guys. They have a lot of respect for us and likewise. I knew that people would pick up on our respect for each other. I knew that it would create a lot of buzz; two boybands shouldn’t be touring together and performing together that’s just unheard of. A lot of people thought that our egos would get in the way or that our fans wouldn’t allow it but we went ahead and did it anyhow. I think more so that it’s all the songs, all the music and all the fun that people can have coming to see that show, that’s what brought people in. That’s what I thought would make the tour so successful. I was all in and ready, so was everybody else.

You’ve been touring in the US this year and you’re coming to the UK next year. What can UK fans expect from the show?

A lot of hit records. A lot of familiar material. A lot of good old fashioned entertainment. A lot of moments. We’ve created a lot of fun moments during the show – crowd participation and interaction. There’s slow songs, tender moments, fun songs, dancing, dance breakdowns and just really good music. There’s new songs, old songs…it’s a rollercoaster ride really.

Is it difficult to get all 9 of you on stage at the same time?

We open the show together but our stage is so huge. There’s no bad seat in the arena because the stage covers almost the whole floor of the arena. There are 9 of us on stage but it doesn’t look crowded. There are only a few moments where we’re all on the stage. The opening we’re all on stage and there are a couple of times where we join forces. Its one super boyband group but more so it’s both groups together doing their thing, doing their hit songs and being themselves on stage.

Alongside the tour you’ve got the album featuring both groups’ greatest hits and a couple of new tracks?

Yes that’s right. Most of the songs on that album will be sung in the show.

We’re ridiculously excited about NKOTBSB coming over to the UK next year…

Wow! I’m glad you’re excited because that makes me excited. It may be like Take That and Westlife joining forces and doing a huge tour. It’s a big deal.

Yeah but New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys are way cooler than those groups….

You think so? (laughs) Maybe that’ because we’re from here (the US) that you think that? We tend to think that British rock groups are cooler than the rock groups here. We have respect, like we do for the Backstreet Boys, for Take That and the groups that are over there (the UK) as well.

Is NKOTBSB going to be a permanent fixture or haven’t you decided that yet?

We haven’t planned that far. We’ll just see where it takes us. The thing is, if people want to hear and see us we’ll do it. We love doing it. We had a real blast hanging out with each other backstage and onstage. It was cool getting to know the Backstreet Boys. There’s a few songs that I’ve grown to really love of the Backstreet Boys because I’ve toured with them, that I didn’t know. It was just cool to get to know them personally and see how really talented they are. To do it again, I would love to. It was great seeing their fans in the crowd and they loved seeing our fans in the crowd. It was good to see all of our fans meshed into one. It was an awesome experience.

Can we expect a new album from NKOTB to follow-up ‘The Block’?

It’s not planned yet but I think it’s a good idea that we do one. I think everyone is ready to do one and all of our fans are ready to hear some new material and see something new from us. That will definitely be in the works.

‘The Block’ was progression and evolution for NKOTB. Do you think the new record would build on that or would you do something completely different?

You don’t want to try and reinvent the wheel too much. You have to let your creativity take you where it’s going to take you without it getting out of control. You don’t want to try to be something that you’re not. You just want to give good solid music to people – something they can relate to and connect with. Not something that’s too out of space. I think we’re good at that. We’re good at hitting the bullseye; doing something creative but commercial at the same time.

You were one of the first bands to work with Lady Gaga…

Yeah (laughs). We did a duet with her on our album. She’s on the same record label and our label were like ‘we’ve got this Lady Gaga chick that you guys have met and really like and we want her to tour with you. Is that ok?’ We said ‘yes that’s fine, it’s one big family here’. She’s great. She walked into the studio one time and we were like ‘who is this chick? She is a star.’ It turns out we were correct. She warmed up the stage for us and now getting her on the phone would be quite a task.

You had a solo album out earlier this year. Is the solo career something you’re planning keep doing on the side?

The solo record is a great outlet for me. It’s a lot of fun. Sometimes when you’re in a group there’s things that you can’t do and don’t have total control over. When I do a solo album I have total control and it just gives me a great feeling of satisfaction to be able to do that also. It doesn’t take away from the group, it enhances the group. It gives the fans new material to listen to and it’s a lot of fun for me. It gives me something to do when the New Kids aren’t touring. It’s something that I will always continue to do. It’s something the fans love and I love doing solo stuff.

How do you find the time to do it all?

I don’t know. I think when you just love doing something you find the time. It’s hard because I do have a wife and two kids along with everything else. They have to put up with me being on the go. When I promoted my solo album I did it in conjunction with the NKOTBSB tour. It wasn’t like I did the NKOTBSB tour and then went off on another tour. I did them simultaneously. Now I’m home and I’m having some good time at home.

When you come over to the UK you’re going to have to teach the EF team how to do your dance routines. We don’t want to be the only ones getting it wrong in the audience…

Maybe I’ll make a YouTube instructional video and send it to you privately so you can practice the routines for months before we actually get there. You’ll be ready.

It’ll take us months to learn it trust me…

I know. It definitely seems like it takes a long time but then it starts clicking. It’s funny, you’ll be in the dance studio thinking ‘I’ll never get this, it’s too much’. Then all of a sudden when you least expect it, it just clicks. Your body just takes over and you go on auto-pilot. It’s really kind of a phenomenon.

Well when you come over look into the crowd and the ones dancing horrifically will be us…

(laughs) I don’t think you’ll be the only ones. It’s all about just letting go and going crazy!

NKOTBSB bring their tour to the UK in April 2012 starting in Belfast on 20th April and ending at London’s O2 Arena on 28th April. Tickets go on sale on Friday 29th October 2011 at 9am

Jordan Knight interview backstage at Steven and Chris

Jordan did an interview with Steven and Chris while backstage at their show today.

Q: What's your favourite song to cover?
Jordan says... "I did a cover of a Prince song called 'I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,' and to me, it's a great cover because I didn't do it verbatim. The song was originally fast and kind of bouncy, and I switched it to a ballad. I made it my own, but you didn't lose the song—actually, I think the song was enhanced by what I did to it."

Q: What does it take to do a kick-ass cover song?
Jordan says... "Doing a cover is tricky, because you don't want to ruin it. If you pick a song that's already great, then the only place you can go from there is down. You almost want to choose a somewhat obscure song that might not be an incredible hit so you can do something different and interesting to it. It's a fine line: You don't want to insult the song by doing it over, but because it's a good song, you want to do it over."

Q: What's been your fave performance to date on Cover Me Canada?
Jordan says... "Whosarmy just did Paul Anka's 'Lonely Boy' on the show, and that was a classic example of to do a cover well. They switched the timing of it and made it their own but still maintained the emotion and spirit of the song. You could really feel the lyrics with what they did. I think if you do something interesting musically to a song, but the lyrics still come across, then that's the best marriage of technicality and emotion."

Q: What one word would you use to describe each of the remaining competitors?
Jordan says... "Whosarmy: professional. Ali Milner: organic. (She seems like she's a little shy, but that works for her, because you want to take a look behind the curtain and see who she really is.) Warren Dean Flandez: ambitious and hardworking. Melanie Morgan: solid."

Q: Do you like to sleep with the covers on or off?
Jordan says... "I sleep with the covers on. And I need a t-shirt. I can't sleep without a shirt on. And not a tank top either; it has to be a regular cotton t-shirt."

Jordan revealed some other big news to S&C: Cover Me Canada is launching their ultimate superfan contest! One lucky winner will score a VIP trip to Toronto to watch the CMC finale in true rockstar style: They'll be hangin' tough with Jordan and the judges (not to mention the bands!) and receive backstage passes and access to the awesome after-party! NKOTB News for October 26th

Mark Wahlberg will be on "Anderson" on Friday, and they are featuring Wahlburgers, so Donnie may be on some pre-taped portions of show as well.  There is a quick preview on Anderson Cooper's website.

Here is Jordan's response (on Twitter) to the interview Digital Spy published yesterday.
Hey All... I was told there's an article that I did... saying... we aren't doing any more music.. blah blah...
I was mis quoted and its un true... I wouldn't say that... I wouldn't do that...
If I DID say that...and I didn't want to record with my brothers because "we're all busy and have separate lives", .....
then someone would need to smack me upside the head....
So....new album....when? not sure..., new album never? ....well that's just crazy.
Wahlburgers now has a website: Wahlburgers.com.

Digital Spy interviews Jordan Knight and Howie D

Jordan and Howie did an interview with DigitalSpy. Jordan talks about if he has any plans to record more music with NKOTB or solo and more.

For those in need of a quick recap, founders of the boyband genre New Kids on the Block teamed up with '90s heartthrobs the Backstreet Boys last year to form the tongue-tyingly titled NKOTBSB.

After a string of sold-out dates across the US and even a joint album, the supergroup recently announced a series of UK shows for next year. Excited, we caught up with BSB's Howie and NKOTB's Jordan Knight to find out more.

Are you excited about bringing the NKOTBSB tour to the UK?
Howie: "Very excited - it's a great show! The fact that two massive fanbases are able to come together and join this amazing show is incredible. I always say it's a girls night out - anywhere between three and four generations are getting away from their husbands or boyfriends for a great night out - meaning it's also great for single guys!"
Jordan: "I think it's been three years since NKOTB have been over in the UK. To go to a foreign land and be accepted is always a great thing."

It's quite an unusual idea. Were you worried about upsetting any hardcore fans?
Jordan: "There were a lot of fans on both sides crossing their arms saying they didn't want to deal with certain fans who just wanted one band for themselves. I think they've since seen that the show plays out really well."
Howie: "There are obviously some very territorial fans on both sides, and it seemed to shock them at first. Once they accepted it and we did our first show and they saw that both bands got equal stage time and it fitted together well, it was all good."

Do you each have favorite of your back catalog that you think stands up well today?
Howie: "It's so tough to pick just one song! 'Quit Playing Games' is one that the fans particularly seem to love, but 'All I Have To Give' has been one of my favorites since day one. 'Drowning' is also a huge crowd-pleaser. We're blessed that we have a lot of timeless songs."
Jordan: "I love 'Step By Step' and 'Valentine Girl' - they always go down very well at the show."

Are there any particular moments from your past you now cringe at?
Howie: "There are definitely a few of those! A song on our first album, called 'If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself A Bad Boy)' is one that we still joke about. Whether it's hairstyles, clothing or songs, it's all a learning process!"
Jordan: "Anyone who looks at old pictures of themselves tends to cringe, but there are a few where I think, 'Yeah, you looked pretty good' too! I look back at some photos and you can see why we were as big as we were."

The show is two and a half hours with 34 songs in total; is it a pretty gruelling schedule?
Howie: "It's not that bad actually as we each get time off stage while the other band is on. We all start together and then take it in turns and get a 12 to 15-minute break. We actually get bathroom breaks if we want them, which I think is a first for a tour!"
Jordan: "The great thing about the show is that because we get a break it's always high energy. Surprisingly, Nick Carter is the most energetic out of all of us - I've never seen someone with that kind of energy night after night before!"

Aside from the tour, are the Backstreet Boys/NKOTB still together?
Howie: "BSB are absolutely still together. We're giving each other some time for solo projects, but we're also in the process of putting together the next Backstreet Boys album. It's too early to say what the direction of the record will be - right now we're just writing and gathering songs. We always try to top ourselves with each album."
Jordan: "NKOTB released a hits album to support the tour, but we're not recording any new material together. We all have separate lives and careers and we all join up when it's necessary."

Howie - you release your first solo album next month; have the nerves kicked in?
Howie: "I'm very excited about it. One great thing about Backstreet Boys fans is their support for individual stuff - because they know it's only temporary. I think it's how we've managed to stay together. There is an understanding between the fans and within the group that we'll always be together in spite of our solo projects. I think my new album is pretty shocking - I've worked with some great producers and written more than ever before. It has a similar sound to Taio Cruz, Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta."

Jordan - you released your fourth solo album this year; can we expect any more music in the future?
Jordan: "There may be a couple more singles from me, but there won't be any new material from me until 2013 or something. I'll always make music - I'll never stop. Everybody still knows my first single 'Give It To Me' - I've had so many pats on the back over that song and video! It would be nice to be credited for my other music that I've worked hard on, but that's the way it goes!"

You've both been in the industry for a fair while now; would you like to lend your expertise to American Idol or The Voice?
Howie: "I'm a huge fan of those shows, so I absolutely would! I've actually partnered up with a guy who used to be in the band 3Deep and we've been working on breaking new bands in Canada. I've always been into helping other artists and giving them advice."
Jordan: "I'm doing a show in Canada right now called Cover Me Canada and I'm one of the judges. Are there any ones in the UK that will hire me [laughs]? Those shows are much more sensationalized and have a lot more money, but the show I do has some fantastic bands."

Do you think shows like the The X Factor are a good breakthrough opportunity for bands today?
Howie: "I'm a big fan of The X Factor and I'm excited to see Simon [Cowell] come back. He's a great mentor and somebody who has a great ear for talent and is very honest. I think it's a great way for new bands to get recognized - we performed on the UK version while we were on tour and I thought the mentor setup was spot on. You'd never get the kind of coaching before!"
Jordan: "I think YouTube is a huge platform these days - look at Justin Bieber. I think it might be easier to get discovered now because record execs can look at people from all over the world. Things are so different nowadays."

NKOTBSB kick off the UK leg of their tour in Ireland on April 20. Watch the bands rehearsing for the jaunt below:

Boston Herald article about Wahlburgers opening

The Boston Herald posted an article about Wahlburgers:

Marky Mark’s cooking up new TV project

It was a family affair at the Hingham Shipyard last night where Hollywood sibs Mark and Donnie Wahlberg joined their chef bro, Paul, as they threw open the doors of their new burger joint, Wahlburgers.

“It’s a lot of fun and we’ve brought a lot of the old neighborhood with us,” said former Dot rat Donnie, who stars in CBS’ “Blue Bloods.”

“Obviously, we’ve had success with Alma Nove (the three boys’ upscale eatery across the street),” he said. “But this is something that is a little more fun and a little more of the spirit of the family. You can have a drink, some fries, a shake or a frappe. And the government cheese — just like we had as little kids.”

“And the onion rings are great,” added clan matriarch Alma Wahlberg.

There was talk of a Wahlburgers reality show, but Mark reported that Paul is “apprehensive.”

“He’s a real working chef, he’s in the kitchen cooking,” said “The Fighter” tough guy. “This is my brother’s dream, and he’s obviously concerned with the idea of doing a reality show. Because when he hears ‘reality show’ he thinks ‘Jersey Shore.’

“But I think of it as a docudrama,” said the Tinseltown producer. “I think it is very compelling. It’s about someone trying to build a real business, and he’s very passionate, and nothing makes for better TV than that.

“I told him ‘I’ve been very successful in the television business so far and you’re very, very successful in the restaurant business. So why don’t you trust me like I trust you?’ ”

Now, Paul is starting to warm to the idea, said Marky, adding that they plan to shoot a “sizzle reel” soon and bring it to HBO, which has right of first refusal on Mark’s TV projects. If the cable network passes, they’ll continue to shop it.

Burger-lovin’ boldfacers made the scene such as Dan Paille of the Boston Bruins, Patriots tight ends Rob and Dan Gronkowski and corner back Kyle Arrington, Red Sox slugger David “Big Papi” Ortiz and teammate Kevin Youkilis and Olympic hockey hero Mike Eruzione. We also spotted Mark’s big screen alter ego “Irish” Micky Ward.

Inside the 120-seat retro modern burger joint there’s a Wahl of Wahlbergs complete with childhood snaps of Alma’s nine kids, prom pics (!) and photos from the original NKOTB and Funky Bunch days. Now, that’s worth the price of admission ...

And speaking of Mark and “The Fighter,” it appears his falling out with director David O. Russell won’t put the kibosh on the star’s plans for a sequel.

“I’m still doing ‘The Fighter 2’ — hopefully sooner rather than later,” Mark told the Track.

He said the script is being written and he’d like to begin shooting by the end of next year.

“I’m not getting any younger,” he groused

Jordan on CBC TV on Thursday

Jordan will be on the Steven and Chris Show on CBC on Thursday to talk about "Cover Me Canada".

WAPS talks to Jordan Knight about NKOTBSB tour!

WAPS ("We are Pop Slags") did an interview with Jordan. He talks about the NKOTBSB European tour and more...

First we brought you Backstreet Boys’ Howie D – and now we’ve got the only and only Jordan Knight! NKOTBSB fans who are waiting patiently for the joint tour in Spring 2012, keep reading….

WAPS: Jordan – thanks for talking to us today. We recently spoke to Howie D about the upcoming tour, and we wondering how performing now compares with your experiences in the late 80s/early 90s?

JK: Well, I always tell people now that…I kinda view each tour as ‘the last tour’ – but back in the day I was like, ‘My God, it’s never gonna end!’ So then I would tour and take it for granted, but now, to me it’s like every tour is the last tour – this could be the last time we come to the UK. Is that true? I don’t know, but that’s how I’m looking at it. I just try to soak it up a lot more, and really connect with the audiences, and be in the moment a lot more.

NKOTBSB perform ‘Don’t Turn Out The Lights’ on Dancing With The Stars:

WAPS: Are there going to be any differences between the European and US legs of the NKOTBSB tour?

JK: I don’t think we need to change much, because it’s pretty damn excellent I think! Haha. We might need to change it up a little bit here and there if we get bored of any parts or we feel like there are parts that could be improved, but for the most part it’s going to be the same show, probably 90% similar.

WAPS: Any spoilers for us?

JK: Hmmm…. Can I give you spoilers…are your ready to get your socks knocked off?

WAPS: Yes!

JK: Well first of all, we sing all the hits, and we all get along – we genuinely like each other, and you’ll see that from the show. The good thing about the show is that there’s a lot of energy because it’s kinda like a tag-team [between the two groups.] BSB will go on stage and hit it hard, and we’re backstage getting ready, then when they’re done, we go on and we hit it hard – and each group gets a little rest period in between the songs. So whichever group is out there, they’re going at it full-blast. It’s very energetic and fast-paced.

WAPS: What do you get up to in your downtime in the road?

JK: We mope around backstage when we’re not onstage! There’s not much time to go see each city, unfortunately, so a lot of our time is just spent travelling on the bus from city to city. We do some meet-and-greets, have a little catering, play a little ping-pong….then we’re up again!

WAPS: What songs do you most enjoy performing on tour?

JK: I like performing Valentine Girl, Step By Step…the new song we did with BSB (‘Don’t Turn Out The Lights’), I love performing that one.

WAPS: And do you have a favourite BSB song?

JK: They really do have a lot of great songs! I’d say one of my favourites is ‘Incomplete’. It used to be ‘I Want It That Way’ but I didn’t like saying such an obvious song – you know, of course everyone knows ‘I Want It That Way’! But now that I’ve toured with them I know all their material much better, and ‘Incomplete’ is definitely my favourite.

WAPS: And out of the two groups, who is the biggest troublemaker on the road?

JK: Well there’s old Joey Mac…old Joey McIntyre is a jokester – actually so is Nick [Carter], he’s a jokester too.

WAPS: Aren’t they the youngest of each band?

JK: They certainly are, and Nick in fact is the youngest person on the whole stage. Maybe Nick is the biggest troublemaker onstage, and actually A.J [McLean} is a little bit of a troublemaker too, also onstage.

WAPS: What pranks have they played?

JK: You know, we’ll be singing some serious song and we’ll hear howling coming from underneath the stage and it’ll be Nick singing off-key and trying to put us off. Not so much that he’d mess the show up though! But if you hear any bad notes, it’s not me….

WAPS: We’re having a bit of a boy-band resurgence in the UK at the moment – what advice would you offer them?

JK: Have a lot of fun, take your work seriously but don’t take the criticism too seriously. People just yak because you’ll get a lot of attention from girls, and critics will want to knock you off your pedestal, but that’s kinda normal.

WAPS: You released your third solo album ‘Unfinished’ earlier this year – can you tell us about that?

JK: ‘Unfinished’ is an album that I recorded while off the road with the New Kids, and it was kind of a hobby that turned out to be a really good album. I had a lot of people saying ‘You need to release this commercially instead of just letting your fans hear a couple of new songs’. It turned out to be a great body of work and I’m really proud of it. I’ve released a couple singles, which got a great response, and it’s something I can do when I’m not with the New Kids. I’ve got some solo gigs coming up, it’s nice to have an outlet to do my own thing and the fans are really supportive.

WAPS: Is it coming out in the UK?

JK: I think there was a plan by the label to release it in the UK – man, I would love to. That would be a dream of mine to tour the UK and do some performances solo. I’d love that.

WAPS: Any chance you could do that when you’re in Europe next year with NKOTBSB?

JK: Well, maybe….I did that here in the US and it was really gruelling to promote both things at the same time. I may do that, but there’s not much time to do both. I can lightly promote my solo record while I’m there touring, but after the tour it would be kinda fun to spin-off and do my own thing also.

WAPS: Just one last question from us – any chance that NKOTB will be performing the Lady Gaga collaboration ‘Big Girl Now’?

JK: We did actually perform that live a couple of times in the US, she opened up for us back when she was still just Lady Gaga – and y’know, now she’s LADY GAGA….we can’t even get her on the phone anymore, haha.

JK: Actually when we did that she was a really good sport, and when she came in to write with us we were like, ‘She’s such a star, we need to make it a duet – get her on the album!’ And that was before she was famous.

WAPS: We do like that song – it’s quite filthy.

JK: I know it is. Haha.

Hollywood.com interviews Donnie Wahlberg about Justin Bieber

HollywoodLife.com did a short interview with Donnie while he was at the Mohegan Sun’s 15th Anniversary event. He talks about what he thinks about Justin Bieber and how fame has changed since the New Kids first became famous.

Update: video has been deleted, does anyone have it saved? Here is the article that went with it:

Donnie Wahlberg is a Belieber! The New Kids On The Block frontman tells HollywoodLife.com that he actually got a chance to meet Justin Bieber! Keep reading to find out what he had to say!

“I met him he’s a nice kid,” Donnie tells us. “It is what it is. Everybody has their own path I’m not big on telling younger entertainers who are doing similar things to what I did like any advice, they’ll figure it out.”

But when asked if his fans are the best in the world he responded: “I know we have the most devoted fans! NKOTB fans are the best out of any in the world!”

NKOTB rose to fame in the 80s and Donnie says Justin is at an advantage with the advent of social media.

“We didn’t have the outlets for information in 1988 when we broke out that’s available now,” he says. “On the one hand that’s a curse because if you sneeze it makes major news all around the world. But on the other hand if you make major news around the world and it’s negative, it’s gone tomorrow. It used to be if you had a scandal your career was over. Now if you have a scandal you’re the most famous person in the world … you make a lot of money.”

NKOTB News for October 20

Here is another update from MusicAgent123:

Donnie visited a school in Brooklyn - read about it below:

Touch of Southie in Brooklyn as Donnie Wahlberg and Michael Patrick MacDonald speak to students

What do a former teen heartthrob and a son of Southie have to say to roomful of Brooklyn high school students?

Plenty it turns out.

Last week, an extraordinary meeting of minds took place in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

As regular readers of this column know, I have a day job as an English teacher at Automotive High School.

In my prior life as an Irish Voice reporter, I got to know author Thomas Kelly, best-selling author of books such as Empire Rising, Payback and The Rackets.

Kelly’s latest gig is a job as a writer and producer on the hit CBS TV show Blue Bloods.  The show is about an Irish American family of cops led by patriarch Frank Reagan, the New York City police commissioner, played by Tom Selleck.

One of the main characters in the show is Chief Reagan’s son Danny, played by Donnie Wahlberg, who has appeared in films such as The Sixth Sense, Zookeeper and Saw IV and V.

Of course, in Wahlberg’s past life, he was one-fifth of the chart-topping band New Kids on the Block.  The kids -- now known as NKOTB -- still get together and perform. But Wahlberg has also successfully made the transition from singing to acting.

One thing Kelly and Wahlberg share is a desire to remember where they come from.

Both currently make fine livings in show business, but their beginnings were humble, to say the least.  So they understand that kids in traditionally underserved communities sometimes need different kinds of motivation.

That’s where the Actors and Writers Book Club of the Writers Guild Of America East (WGAE) Foundation comes in.

The club sends actors and writers to high schools to read and discuss works of literature to get students excited about reading, writing and story telling.

So Kelly asked if my students would be interested in a program featuring Wahlberg, as well as the acclaimed memoirist Michael Patrick MacDonald, whose book All Souls: A Family Story of Southie, is perhaps the definitive look at that most Irish of cities, South Boston.

In the past I’d taught MacDonald’s book in my English classes.  Though it is about poor and working class Irish Catholics, the book’s themes have always resonated deeply with my students who are largely black and Hispanic.

MacDonald writes poignantly about the scourges of crime and drugs, fatherlessness, as well as the perseverance of large families living in poverty.

The Southie disdain for snitches and rats is also something my students are quite familiar with.

I decided to spend two weeks with my current 12th grade students (60 overall) reading excerpts from All Souls to prepare them for MacDonald and Wahlberg’s visit.

This was particularly timely since just a few months back, the most infamous South Bostonian of them all, Whitey Bulger, had been arrested.

This time around, my students were consumed by the question of how we -- how MacDonald, how we all -- are shaped by our environment.

Are you destined to follow in the footsteps of alluring criminals like Whitey Bulger, as one of MacDonald’s brothers did?  Or is it possible to not only break the cycle but return to help others do the same, as Michael Patrick MacDonald did?

“Destiny -- that’s a powerful word,” replied Wahlberg last Friday in the Automotive auditorium, when he was asked by a student if he believes “geography is destiny.”

Wahlberg went on to note that his own large family from Dorchester was “poor,” surviving on welfare and “government cheese.”

But Kelly, MacDonald and Wahlberg agreed that with passion and tenacity, you can become anything you want, wherever you come from.

“My own brother was in prison,” Wahlberg added, when the New Kids were getting big.

Wahlberg, of course, is referring to world famous actor and Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg, most recently seen as Irish Micky Ward in The Fighter.

The Brooklyn teenagers peppered the writers and singer/movie star with questions about acting and singing, passion and show biz.

“That was great,” Wahlberg said afterwards.

And in case anyone thought he was merely acting, he vowed to return to the school for a basketball game when the season kicks off next month.

Joey McIntyre recording a new Christmas album

Joey is recording a new Christmas album! Here is an article from the Boston Herald about the Sense-ation gala, how Rhys is doing and what Joey has been up to.

Joey McIntyre records a Christmas album at Sanctum Studios in Boston yesterday.
Turns out, not every child star grows up to be an adult train wreck. Exhibit A: Jamaica Plain homey Joe McIntyre, who shot to stardom at age 12 as the youngest member of New Kids on the Block.

Now pushing 40, Joey’s a husband and a dad, a successful actor — and he can still make the girls scream when he and the rest of NKOTB hit the stage with fellow boy-banders the Backstreet Boys. And tonight, Joe’s back home in Boston to help raise some dough for research and treatment for kids suffering from disorders affecting vision and hearing at the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Sense-ation gala.

“This is a great event,” Joey Mac told the Track. “Last year we raised about a million dollars, which is unbelievable, and this year we expect to match it.”

Joey and wife Barrett’s 2-year-old son Rhys was born with severe hearing loss. But thanks to early diagnosis and treatment, dad says Rhys is doing “phenomenal.”

“If you hung out with him for a day you wouldn’t even think he suffers from hearing loss,” he said. “I just thank God for the amazing technology, the hearing aids and the work my wife does with Rhys and a speech therapist every week.”

Joe says the toddler, who wears hearing aids, “understands everything we tell him” and speaks like any other 2 year old.

“Today he’s pointing to his ear and saying, ‘What happened?’ My wife figured out that his ears popped on the plane. It’s all baby talk, but he’s talking and understanding everything.”

Rhys is the second of the McIntyres’ three kids — big bro Griffin is 4 and baby sis Kira is 4 months.

“Three’s the new 9,” laughed Joe, who has seven sisters and a brother. “It’s a ton of fun, and these kids are awesome and beautiful and it’s really what life is all about — amazing and thrilling and challenging and a lot of fun. I feel very, very blessed.”

Almost 30 years after he became a ’tween idol, McIntyre’s career is still going full throttle. This past Friday he had a guest stint on “CSI: NY,” and yesterday the New Kids announced the dates for their European tour with BSB. In November, he has a guest role in the USA series “Psych,” (He plays a cop who may or may not be a superhero.) He’s also got a part in the upcoming Garry Marshall romcom “New Year’s Eve” alongside a ton of Hollywood heavies including Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel and more.

“If you’re going to have a cameo in a movie, this is the one to have it in,” he laughed.

And in his spare time, Joey’s recording a Christmas album that will be out by Thanksgiving.

“I’m just so happy to be in Boston now,” he said. “It’s great to be home.”

Boston.com: Joey McIntyre steps up for Mass. Eye and Ear

Here is a short article from Boston.com:

In town for tomorrow’s Mass. Eye and Ear’s Sense-ation! gala, New Kid on the Block Joey McIntyre took a sneak peek today at a guitar signed by the members of Aerosmith. (The ax, donated by the Who’s Pete Townshend, will be auctioned off tomorrow to benefit the Curing Kids Fund.) Joey hung out for a few with his homeys, Mass. Eye and Ear CEO John Fernandez and Celts CEO Wyc Grousbeck, who’s chairman of the hospital board...Meanwhile, Joey Mac’s bandmate Jordan Knight was in Toronto for Blissdom Canada, a social-media conference for women. Knight posed for photos and then surprised even the organizers by doing karaoke versions “Step By Step” and “Hangin’ Tough” backed by 100 women singing along.

Boston Globe article on Wahlburgers

Here is an article from the Boston Globe about Wahlburgers:

By Jessica Bartlett, Town Correspondent

Paul Wahlberg’s newest restaurant, Wahlburgers, will open to fanfare at the Hingham Shipyard on Monday, Oct. 24, just a few months since the idea was first brought to the attention of Hingham officials.

It’s been a fast-track process for the casual burger restaurant, which will be a neighbor to the existing Alma Nove - an upscale Italian and Mediterranean cuisine restaurant also owned and founded by Wahlberg, his celebrity brothers - Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, and family friend Ed St. Croix.

The new establishment is anticipated to be approximately 4,367 square feet, with 120 seats (80 inside, 40 outside) that will serve traditional burgers, fries, hotdogs, and shakes.

It’s a $900,000 project that received the town’s approval for an all liquor-license in mid-August, and received the state’s signatures on the license earlier this week.

The opening event, which will be in the evening of the Oct. 24, will feature “a celebrity filled grand opening party,” St. Croix said. The event is invite-only, and will also double as a charity event, representatives said.

By Tuesday, Oct. 25, the establishment will be open for business to the public at 11 a.m.

The restaurant plans to open a few days prior to the grand opening to iron out remaining details, though a definite date has not been set.

Despite any recent bumps in the road, the biggest hurdle in creating the restaurant was acquiring the name.

It was previously trademarked to a Tom Wahl’s, the owner of a burger chain based out of New York, which had an aptly named “Wahlburger” on the menu. Yet Wahlberg business partners were able to secure full spectrum of the name in late August.

Since then, much has occurred – the permits have been filed, the liquor orders are in, the training has begun, and everyone is ready and prepped for the big day.

“We have ongoing employee training every day, so when the doors open, we are prepared,” said St. Croix in an e-mail about the opening. “Everyone's excited to launch the brand and we feel very confident that we will compete well in the "better burger" space.

The burgers will also feature a "special sauce", and some of the frappes will be "adult only", or containing alcohol.

Although the main thoroughfare will focus on the classic 50’s diner-like menu, at a selectmen’s meeting in August, Wahlberg said the menu would also focus on some healthier options, such as salmon burgers, turkey burgers, and eventually salads.

It’s an opening that has generated interest from around the country, St. Croix said.

“We've had requests from people all around the world wanting a Wahlburgers in their hometown, but in the mean time they will make it a point to visit the first one in Hingham when they are in the Boston area,” he said.

If you haven't already seen it, Joey posted a new blog at NKOTB.com

New blog from Joey McIntyre

Here is a copy of Joe's latest blog on NKOTB.com:

Well, folks, I have literally had my hands full- hence the 5 tweets in 2 months.

How dare I abandon the social network like that! Thank God I don’t measure my love of life and involvement in my career by how many tweets I execute. I did for a brief spell back a couple years, but one of the many blessings of having 3 very little kids is it keeps my priorities straight.

I’m as creative as I ever was and have been working on several project- most outside the music world but all firmly with in the “how can I touch you?” world.

I think even those who know me may be a little surprised.

In the meantime, I’ve waded back into the water of acting. And so far the water’s fine. I haven’t gone very deep and its only been a few dips in the last 6 months or so, but all good stuff. Which makes me wanna take a serious plunge! (That was 5 water puns if you’re counting).

CSI:NY was fun shooting. Kind of odd telling people I am on a TV show and not seeing it before hand. But I think I’ll work again. I don’t think they’ll run me out of town for this one. I hope!

Then in November my guest spot on “Psych” airs. Good times.

And then in December I am part of one serious cast of actors in the movie “New Years Eve”. I was lucky enough to work with Garry Marshall again and I will tell you what everyone in Hollywood (and everywhere else) knows: there is not a kinder man than he. So fun to work with him and the cast. I’m afraid to give my part away and tell you who out of the amazing cast I worked with, so you’ll just have to go to the theatre and see for yourself. J

But meanwhile back at the homestead, my long days have been filled with one 3 and a half year old testing his limits and mine. One little bruiser who will be 2 in a couple months and is as determined as anyone I ever met to get into whatever he has his eyes on…oh, and don’t help him with ANYTHING. He wants to do it all HIMSELF. FYI- his hearing is so good. He understands everything and he is talking more and more and on par with your average 2 year old. Good stuff…seems like forever ago when we didn’t know what his path would be, but his hearing loss (although something we work on and monitor) is almost forgettable during the day. No small miracle, thanks to God, to today’s technology, some really wonderful people in the field of hearing loss and one amazing mother who has not and will never miss a beat.

I dived into full time dad when we got home from tour at the beginning of August and by the end of the month I could not shut up about how tired I was.

Thankfully I got tired of being tired and have now settled in to the fact that it takes a lot of energy to do what we are doing now and I just have to keep it as simple as possible for a few…years??? Haha! Who knows? But we do manage to have a lot of fun.

And finally, “my little girl”. As my mother said about a picture she has of Kira by her bedside, “it looks like she’s smiling into tomorrow.” And let me tell you, it feels that way, when she smiles at me. I’m biased, but boy is she pretty. She has been such a chill baby. Sleeps good. Sooo sweet. Just plump enough. I kind of chomp on her cheeks constantly. I can’t wait for her to start bossing her big brothers around. Soon enough.

Fair to say, I feel like the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Being a dad is incredibly fulfilling and thoroughly challenging. And I so cherish the thought of watching these kids grow up for the next 100 years.

Like many I know and hear about, I feel that my family is my foundation and now that I have that bedrock I can begin. I look at life differently. I am feeling now like I am just now becoming the person I want to be- my true self. It might look from the outside like the same old Joe, but I am experiencing an awareness that I haven’t before and that’s an awesome feeling. Sounds heavy but its subtle.

I look forward to revealing all the projects I’m working on. Especially one that is literally right round the corner. Stay tuned! Oxox Love ya.

Jordan was on the "100 Greatest Songs of the 00s" on VH1 last night. The show will re-air tonight at 5PM and hour 2 will be on at 6 today. It looks like it's a week long series. You can find the schedule of airing on the VH1 Website.

Eight minutes with Jordan Knight: Interview with TVGuide.ca

Here is an interview Jordan did with TVGuide.ca:

Eight minutes with Jordan Knight

I know I’m supposed to be a hard-nosed media professional who girds her loins with objectivity and wears cynicism like it’s this season’s Chanel, but omigosh, omigosh, omigosh!

I’m on CBC’s Cover Me Canada set to interview judge Jordan Knight. Of New Kids on the Block fame. Whom women of a certain age remember gracing numerous T-shirts, pins, bed sheets, and in my case, a fold-out poster from Tiger Beat taped to my closet door. At lip level.

“He must never know about that poster!” Reporter Melissa scolds. “You’ll lose credibility! And keep it zipped about going to the NKOTB-Backstreet Boys concert this summer!” Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa sulks, while Reporter Melissa skims over her questions.

And then, he appears. In a leather jacket, jeans and white T-shirt, the man once named one of People’s Most Beautiful perches atop a stool. Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa’s hand starts twitching and she suddenly needs a glass of water.

“Pitiful,” Reporter Melissa sniffs and she strides towards him, cooly lobbing questions his way.

Reporter Melissa: You’ve stayed in good shape. What kind of workout are you doing?
Jordan Knight: I hate to say the word yoga, but I do calisthenics, stretching and yoga pretty much every morning. And I just watch what I eat. I don’t eat a lot, and I try to eat non-fattening and non-sugary foods.

Unable to hold her silence, 13-year-old Melissa blurts, “So does that mean no cake and ice cream?” It’s a cheesy reference to a lyric in his song “Stingy,” which has been playing non-stop on her iPod for the past two weeks. Reporter Melissa hangs her head in shame.

He seems unfazed. “I do eat cake and ice cream, but I do it in moderation. I think the only diet that works is the self-control diet.” And that’s Minute 2. Reporter Melissa shoulders back in just as 13-Year-Old Melissa is about to gush about that poster.

Reporter Melissa: Looking back at the ‘80s and ‘90s, are there any fashions you wore that now you’re like ‘What was I thinking?’
Jordan Knight: Actually, I was looking at something the other day. It looked like I was wearing pyjamas, basically. And I was out! I was, like, having a night on the town in a pair of pyjamas, so that was really strange.

Minutes 3 and 4 tick by. Reporter Melissa seems in control. She remembers her awesomely tolerant husband back home, shoves thoughts of the poster to the side, and holds 13-Year-Old Melissa’s twitching hand at bay.

Reporter Melissa: I know you did a quick walk-by on (NKOTB member Donnie Wahlberg’s show) Blue Bloods. Would you ever do your own show?
Jordan Knight: I was the guy in the stadium scene, in the crowd. Joking! But acting? If somebody said ‘I’ve got the perfect part for you’ I would definitely do it. But I don’t believe in my acting skills that much to go and go get it. It’d be fun, though.

Reporter Melissa: Will you do gigs while you’re in Toronto?
Jordan Knight: I might. Chum FM just started playing a new song of mine called "One More Night" and it’s one of my favourite songs on the album Unfinished. If that gains traction, I might do a few shows. I’ll probably do something anyhow.

The news is too much for 13-Year-Old Melissa, and at Minute 6 she bursts in, all flushed and giggly, “I saw you in concert in Hamilton this summer!” He looks up, with the puppy-dog brown eyes 13-Year-Old Melissa saw taped to her closet door every night. “Oh, yeah?’

Reporter Melissa knows what’s coming and tries to dive back in before the words tumble out. But it’s like she’s in one of those sitcom sequences where someone’s moving in super-slow-motion, yelling, “Stooooooop!”

Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa: I totally had a poster of you in my bedroom. You know that one where you’re like this? (She cocks her head to the side and arches an eyebrow.)
Jordan Knight, clearly amused: Which poster? What?!

Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa: Yeah, it said ‘I love Jordan’ at the bottom!
Jordan Knight: Really? I don’t remember that poster.

Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa: Oh, yeah – you can Google it!
Jordan Knight, valiantly humouring her: OK, I’ll go check it out.

And that’s Minute 8. The interview is up and I make way for the next reporter, who’s waiting with her veil of cynicism intact.

Reporter Melissa: Idiot!
Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa: Did you see? He only yawned once in the interview! He said it’s because he came in late last night, and that totally proves he didn’t think I was boring!

Reporter Melissa: I can’t take you anywhere.
Thirteen-Year-Old Melissa: Do you think it’s too late to ask for a picture with him?

Donnie Wahlberg to attend 8th annual Billboard Touring Conference?

According to this article from Billboard, Donnie Wahlberg will be taking part in the 8th annual Billboard Touring Conference in New York November 9-10

Here's the quote from the article:

"NKOTBSB: Anatomy of a Home Run" will break down the trek that uniquely combined the pop supergroups New Kids On the Block and Backstreet Boys in a ground-breaking co-headlining tour that moved more than 500,000 tickets and emerged as one of the sleeper tours of 2011. The unique staging and presentation, which fully integrated the hits and performances of both groups, changed the paradigm for co-headlining tours. Key players will discuss the strategic moves in the set-up, launch, and execution of one of the most creative tour concepts in pop music history, including Peter Katsis/Prospect Park, manager, Backstreet Boys; Jared Paul/AGPS, manager, NKOTB; actor/singer Donnie Wahlberg, NKOTB; Darryl Eaton, agent, Creative Artists Agency; and Brad Wavra, VP, Live Nation...

The 2011 Billboard Touring Conference & Awards will be held Nov. 9-10 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York.

Here is the schedule and it looks like Donnie's part will be on November 9 from 2:30pm - 3:30pm.

Donnie mentioned on his recent Kiss 108 interview that Wahlburgers will be opening around the 24th of this month. Starzlife.com has an article about Paul Wahlberg and the possible reality series:

If you’ve never heard of Paul Wahlberg, you may soon!

Paul is the chef brother of Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, and he’s recently opened a new burger joint in Boston called Wahlburgers.

Both Mark and Donnie who have a financial stake in the restaurant are trying to persuade their brother into turning the restaurant into the site of a new reality series. Paul is reportedly iffy about the decision, because he fears it will turn the restaurant into a joke.

Mark Wahlberg explains,

“I’ve always said if there’s one really talented person in the family it’s him. He’s been a chef for 20, 30 years… But he doesn’t eat good food. All he eats is burgers.

“Everyone thinks it’s a great idea that we should do this kind of docu-drama show about the making of the business, but when you say reality show, he thinks Jersey Shore, which is not a good thing.

“He is so passionate about everything that he does; it’s all about the customer, it’s all about the quality of food, he loves the town that he lives in. He is such a proud, honest, straight, hard-working guy and that’s what we want the show to be about… It’s really about business and building that brand and putting our family to work.”
