Joey McIntyre shares his thoughts about Boston Marathon

Joey posted on his "BLoGston Marathon" blog about the Boston Marathon. Here is what he had to say...

The Day After
Nothing can change that beautiful New England country side. Nothing can wipe away the moment I had with that Joey girl holding that well preserved New Kids poster from ‘89. Nothing can stop the “little person” walking up heart break hill or the double amputee walking down it on prosthetic “blades”. Nothing can take away that kiss I had with my mother. And no ones gonna tell me she didn’t recognize me. No one can take away the signs all along the course for every teacher and aunt and BFF and son and uncle that was running. Nothing can take away what happened 11 minutes after I ran a 3:57 Boston Marathon. And nothing will ever take away the power and resolve and fearlessness of the great city of Boston. We will get through this. It will take time. But we will get through this. See ya next year.

NKOTB interview with Victoria Times Colonist

Here is an interview with the New Kids on the Block from the Victoria Times Colonist:

TORONTO - New Kids on the Block member Joey McIntyre says a recent show to promote their upcoming arena tour wasn't their "finest moment."

But he says it's also not indicative of the upcoming stadium performances that will bring them to Canada in June and July.

At a recent New York concert, band member Jonathan Knight suddenly walked off stage mid-show, never to return.

During a visit to Toronto, Knight admits he's long battled anxiety issues and that it continues to dog him today.

But he says it's not as serious as it once was, insisting the New York meltdown had more to do with lack of sleep and problems with his "day job" as a real estate broker. It's a career he started when he retreated from the limelight after the group disbanded in 1994.

McIntyre, Knight and fellow members Jordan Knight and Danny Wood were in Toronto to promote their new album "10" and an upcoming tour with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees. A publicist said fifth member Donnie Wahlberg was tied up with work on his CBS series "Blue Bloods."

The Canadian Press spoke with McIntyre and Jonathan Knight on Saturday about hangin' tough on tour, a new album and couch-surfing at the homes of fans.

Is it surreal to be promoting new material and starting an arena tour some 25 years after you started? I think a lot of people doubted you'd be at it this long.

Jonathan Knight: I think it's doubly surreal for me. Thirty years ago I never thought we'd be back in '08 and in '08 I never thought we'd be here in '13. It's been a blessing.

The band is getting good reviews for the new album "10," do you credit that to a newfound confidence and maturity?

Joey McIntyre: There's lots of little lessons and things to smile at when you look back and being together for this long.... We went through that period where we wanted probably not to be teenagers anymore — we wanted to do grown-up stuff and we probably took a couple of hits because we were so young and critics probably got on us because of the merchandise and the hysteria and all that stuff. All that stuff is fun but like I said you want to sort of grow out of it but you can't because you are what you are. But now because our fans were so young back then, they're still in their 30s now and even though we're doing this a second time it still feels like we're in the prime of our lives, in the prime of our careers. It's just cool to get a chance to make those albums, make those albums that are more mature and fit us a little bit better than some of the other ones.

It probably helped to pull back from the limelight in the mid-90s and pursue individual projects before regrouping in 2008. It was during that time that Jonathan revealed his struggle with anxiety. After that recent show in New York people wondered: Is it still an issue?

JM: It's not not an issue.

JK: It's not as much of an issue as it was. That was just a bad week. A bad week. I didn't sleep and just was like aggravated with stuff going on back at work. It just built up and that was it.

You mean work in the real estate business?

JK: My work, my day job. Yeah.

Is it difficult to separate those two parts of your life?

JK: No, no...

JM (interrupting): That show wasn't our finest moment. Aside from whatever Jon was experiencing, sometimes we wing it and sometimes we have fun and that's OK but we winged the hell out of that show. And it didn't have a structure and a form and so I really don't think Jon would have done that in an arena show or, you know, in a lot of other shows. I think sometimes each of us want to leave the stage and it was just one of those things.... And then a day later we went to San Francisco, we went to Napa Valley of all places, and we did two acoustic sets that were probably the most intimate we've ever done and as a group, not just Jon, because we all have fears, you know what I mean? Of wanting to grow and do new stuff as a group and I think that was a little bit part of it.

I'm sure it was a lot worse for you guys than it actually seemed for fans. Jon, what was going through your mind while you were on stage at the time?

JK (smiling): Are there any cabs?

CP: When did you first think, 'I can't do this'?

JK: Even before the show started. I just hate that whole show. I've always hated (it).

What do you mean?

JK: Just those type of shows. They're small, it's...

JM: (interrupting): There's not a lot of form, not a lot of form. Some people like to wing it and some people don't. I think a lot of performers would feel the same way. It's just, there's no structure to the show.

JK: I like to know what's coming my way. Always have. In everything I do. I need structure.

There was a report that you took a phone call during the set. Did someone call your cell?

JK: No! I was looking at the lyrics.

JM: I'd been doing that the whole time, too. The first week of the album I kept (looking at my phone) and actually I forgot the words at one point, even after looking at them!

JK: That's a stress in itself right there — doing a new album and trying to remember the words.

How do you keep connected to fans after all these years?

JM: Jon takes fans to dinner, like, constantly. Sometimes he takes "Joe girls" to dinner and I get mad. There's "Jon girls" and "Joe girls" and recently he tweeted a picture of him and a "Joe girl" at dinner and he tried to make me jealous. And I was. But that's literally how close it is.

How does that happen?

JK: We were in Napa the other day and there were five or six of them. I was hungry, I was like, 'Let's go get dinner.' It's the social media age, we've always been very close to our (fans) and I think that we're very approachable people. But I just think Twitter has brought it even closer — I mean, at 3 o'clock in the morning my fans are right here on my iPhone and can communicate. I think it's cool. I've been to fans' houses and slept on their couch. (I'll say), 'I'm coming up to Toronto, get your couch ready.'

Wow. When was that?

JK: That was like two months ago, I came up here for three days.

So that was a personal visit?

JK: Yeah. I pop in and out of places.

JM: He uses his New Kids card.

So was that a fan or a friend?

JK: A fan. But I have a new term — there's a lot of fans that I know really well so I call them "frans."

JM: Frans? I don't love that. I'm a pun guy and I don't like that one but I understand. It's hard. I don't like to say fans either, really. Because it's more than that. We're lucky to have supporters. We used to just call them "supporters" but then that sounds like a support group. Which it is sometimes.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Jordan Knight's interview with OK UK

Jordan was recently interviewed by OK UK magazine. Here is the interview:

New Kids On The Block hunk Jordan Knight talks making sweet music again in exclusive

Those handsome boys set our world on fire when they burst onto the pop scene back in the mid-’80s with hits such as Hangin’ Tough, Step By Step and You Got It (The Right Stuff).

Now, almost 30 years on, the sound of handsome frontman Jordan Knight’s voice – this time not on the radio but on the other end of our actual phone – is still setting OK!’s heart aflutter.

‘Hello, how are you?’ he drawls in his sleepy Massachusetts accent. ‘Where are you, London? I’m in Boston.’ In true Jerry Maguire style, our childhood pop heart-throb still has us at hello.

Looking back on a long, successful career, it’s easy to see how it could’ve all ended so differently for the singer.

Now 42 and happily settled with his wife of eight years, Evelyn, and their sons, Dante, 13, and Eric, six, Jordan faced a well-publicised battle with alcoholism, famously saying it was one particularly bad hangover seven years ago that made him realise he had to grow up for the sake of his kids.

And grow up he has. After the band split in 1994, Jordan went off to pursue a successful solo career, before reuniting with NKOTB – brother Jonathan Knight and pals Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood – in 2007.

Now they’re back with their sixth studio album, 10. And boy it’s a corker.

Here, speaking exclusively to OK! from his home in Boston, Jordan offers his advice to Justin Bieber on avoiding the pitfalls of fame, reveals how bandmate Donnie is stopping NKOTB from coming back to the UK and the line of questioning that made the ‘prudish American’ singer choke on his water midway through our interview…

Did you ever think starting out in 1984 that you’d be here, with such a huge fan base, almost 30 years later?

No, actually, I didn’t. I kept things open and I thought, anything is possible, but I didn’t force-feed it. For a couple of years before we reunited, of course I envisioned it, we all did. But 20 years ago I didn’t think we’d still be doing this in our forties. It’s more of a fun, joyful experience now. It’s not as crazy as it was before.

You were 14 when you joined the group – do you have any words of wisdom for Justin Bieber? He’s had a tough time recently…

I think Bieber’s doing the right thing. Don’t take any junk from nobody! [Laughs] No, I think lately Justin’s had a bad time of it. But nobody really sees what the guys are saying to him before he lashes out at them. The paparazzi say really mean, cruel things to you so they get that reaction. He’s young, he doesn’t know like, maybe I shouldn’t take the bait on this one.

Did that ever get to you guys?

Yes, but you have to learn to be like, oh I’m in a game here, these people are trying to play me out. They say something funny and you learn to say, oh that’s funny, he’s trying to bait me. All the public see is him lashing out and it’s: ‘Oh, Justin Bieber’s going crazy!’ But that’s not really the truth, he’s just reacting to something one person shouldn’t say to another person. It would’ve got to us, but maybe we could recover better because we could talk to each other.

You’re a dad to two boys – if your eldest came to you and said: ‘Dad, I want to be in a boy band,’ what would your advice be?

I’d say: ‘Oh well, I’m going to have to manage you if you want to do that.’ I’d have to have a little control over it at least till he’s 18.

Does your wife get jealous about the time you spend away from home and the attention you receive from fans?

She doesn’t get jealous, she gets antsy because I’m away, or lonely as well as I do, and we miss each other, so that’s a challenge to make sure we’re able to see each other when I’m on some lengthy tour. We actually went to London, last year when we were touring there, she came to London and she loved it. She was like [puts on a girlie voice]: ‘Oh my God, it’s so much better than American cities.’

Maybe you should visit again and bring the tour you’re doing Stateside with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men to the UK…

There are so many stops here in North America that we kind of have to do that first and then Donnie has to go back to filming [Donnie stars in hit CBS drama Blue Bloods], so we can’t just take it straight to the UK. We’ll have to wait till the year after and then we’re coming to the UK. Hopefully it’ll be The Package Tour, or maybe we can grab a couple of boy bands from the UK to join us.

Are you nervous about the release of the new album? After 14 years away from the charts, your last album, The Block, debuted at number one…

Not really. Groups like us who’ve been around for a while, we’ve established our fan base, so I feel like as long as we put out good music for them, that’s the main thing. If it doesn’t go to the top of the charts fine, but if it does then that’s great as well.

The Block – not to mention your solo single Give It To You – were rather risqué. There’s none of that on 10 – are you guys going soft in your old age?!

[Laughs] Are we what in our old age?! Definitely not! No, no, no. I guess on The Block, it was much more risqué. With this album we wanted to take a sweeter, tender, more gentlemanly approach. Often that leads quicker to the… er… end desired result than just coming out with it! [Laughs]

Jordan, you’re making us blush!

[Laughs] Hmmm… [Coughs a lot]

Are you okay?!

Yes, I swallowed some water the wrong way.

It’s all that talk of explicit songs!

Exactly, I had to take a sip of water after that! [Laughs]

On a similar subject, you’re about to set sail on the fifth NKOTB cruise. We’ve had our request for a press place on the boat rejected – what happens on the cruise that you don’t want us to know about?!

Well we’re not going to sing 10, we’re only going to sing The Block if that gives you any indication! No, I’m just kidding. I can’t believe they didn’t give you a cabin. Man! I might pull some strings…

Please do! What happens on the cruise?

Well… a lot of fun. We don’t sleep much, we party every night, we perform a lot of songs, I don’t drink but everybody else does.

You’re not giving much away! We’ve read that no cameras are allowed in the arena for one of Donnie’s shows…

That show, I haven’t even seen that show, what goes down! I taught a yoga class on the boat and it’s funny because I was the only one doing yoga. It was me in the centre of the deck doing yoga poses and everyone else was sitting around watching me, ogling!

On the subject of ogling… You flew out to Ayia Napa to take part in Channel 5’s Trust Me – I’m A Holiday Rep – how was that?

It was fun. That was an experience, just to be where people from the UK go. Did you see when I was talking about the topless sunbathers? I thought topless sunbathing was a French or Italian Rivera thing, but British women just yank it off! There’s none of that on the cruise – we have a British section for us prudish Americans, we have to section it off! [Laughs].

You’re not prudish – we’ve seen pictures of you guys online, six-packs out, tops off…

It’s true, it’s true! [Laughs] We’ve learnt well from the British. I promise we’ll repay you by coming over and seeing you guys soon.

And don't forget...

NKOTB's new album "10"comes out tomorrow!!!

Jordan Knight's interview with Entertainment Focus

Jordan was recently interviewed by Entertainment Focus and he talks about NKOTB's plans to "do some performances in the fall and TV performances before getting ready to do an overseas tour" and more. Here is the interview.

New Kids on the Block reunited for a brand new album in 2008, their first in 14 years. The Block hit number 2 in the US and reintroduced the group onto the music scene.

On the back of its success New Kids on the Block teamed up with Backstreet Boys for a world tour which saw them perform in the UK after a long absence. Five years after The Block the group is ready to release brand new album 10.

We caught up with Jordan Knight from the group to talk about 10, find out more about new single Remix (I Like The) and to find out when New Kids on the Block will be back in the UK.

The last time we spoke to you were preparing to come across to the UK with the Backstreet Boys for the NKOTBSB tour. New Kids on the Block are about to release their new album 10. Tell us all about it.

We’re only collaborating amongst ourselves on this record. The last album, The Block, was released on Interscope records and we collaborated with a lot of music artists that were on that label at the time. It was collaboration heavy so this time around we have just stuck together and we’re doing it all by ourselves. With this album there’s definitely more of a deeper musicality and more introspective songs. There’s less ‘let’s go out, have a drink, party and dance’ to it. It’s more introspective on relationships and things like that.

The feel of the album is very different to The Block. Whereas that album felt more R and B-influenced, 10 feels more pop and closer to the music you’re known for. Was that a conscious shift?

Yes. The Block was more like that. We felt that we needed to take it back home and do some big pop songs; really sing from the heart with some good ballads and pop songs for the girls.

The focus of 10 really is on the vocals and those harmonies are tight…

It’s definitely more vocal conscious. When you have a song with a beat it’s more about the rhythm and attitude and less about how well you execute the notes. This time we had to really execute the notes to stand out against the bed of the beautiful music. We spent a lot more time on the vocals making sure they were sounding really good.

Why did you decide to release Remix (I Like The) as the lead single from the album?

I think with Remix (I Like The) we just wanted to come in a little left and catch people off guard by doing a song that we wouldn’t necessarily do. I think we pull it off but it’s not your regular pop/R&B type song. It’s more of a Bruno Mars/Adele/Cee-Lo throwback kind of record that you hear a lot of these days.

The beat is really strong on the track. We’re loving the video too. Where did the concept for that come from?

The concept of the song is basically saying ‘sexy isn’t necessarily sexy, confidence is sexy’. You can look at an aesthetically beautiful girl but because of her attitude she doesn’t even look beautiful when you get to know her. I think it’s a message that we should all learn and it’s an old message – beauty comes from within. It’s about your attitude and your self-confidence that makes you attractive not the outside.

Let’s talk a bit about the making of the record. How does the dynamic work in the studio?

We always collaborate with producers and writers, and people that are in the studio every day doing it for a living. We do music for a living but we’re not in the studio every day so we go in and listen to people we admire to hear what they’re doing. We put in our two cents then we go back and forth with ideas. Maybe there’s a song with a great melody but the track isn’t so hot so we’ll ask the producer to change it up and put a heavier/lighter drum beat. Sometimes there’s a track that’s great but it just doesn’t suit us so we give the writers ideas. Donnie, Joey and myself go in there first and make tweaks.

Do you have more creative control over your music at this stage in your career?

We have 100% control. We’ve had a lot, even when we were young, than what is perceived. We’re five guys that have been in the business forever now and we know what we need to do and where we need to go more than anybody. More than our managers, more than any producers, more than anybody we know what to do. We’re the guys in control.

It was fantastic to see you on stage here in the UK last year. We know you’re gearing up for a tour with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men in the US. Can you tell us about that?

It’s called The Package Tour. 98 Degrees haven’t been together in 10 years so they’re doing a reunion like ours and it’ll be their first time performing on a tour in over 10 years. Boyz II Men have been touring but they’ve never teamed up with another group like us. Based on what has happened with the Backstreet Boys we know it’s like a powder keg when you put groups together that have a lot of hits. It draws a lot of people; they want to come and hear all those songs they grew up with. Boyz II Men are such great singers with such big pop songs. They are a good combination to go along with us and 98 Degrees.

Will the show use a similar format to the NKOTBSB tour where you perform songs together and separately within your respective groups?

This tour is a little different. With the Backstreet Boys we did it together and opened the show together. This tour is a headlining tour for New Kids on the Block. It’s going to be pretty hard to resist coming up with songs to do with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees. The good thing about the last tour with the Backstreet Boys is that we did stuff together but some of our fans wanted to see us just performing our own material. We’re trying to accommodate both things here at the same time. We want to give the fans a lot of us exclusively but we want to collaborate with the other groups for sure.

Do you have any plans to bring the tour to the UK or perform any New Kids on the Block shows over here?

We’d like to definitely tour the UK and sing a lot of the songs off the 10 album. We’ll have to figure out our schedule. It’ll most likely be around this time next year if we can do it.

How do you find the UK audiences?

They’re great. It’s cool to see. Obviously we don’t live in the UK so it’s a pleasant surprise to go to another country and find fans that are as into you as US fans. It’s very humbling and gratifying. We just feel really grateful that we have the fan base that we have.

We can safely say we’ve never heard as much screaming as we did when we saw you at The O2…

Yeah The O2 is such a big place and an incredible, incredible place to do a concert. The fans we’re definitely into it and we were into them for sure.

What are your hopes with 10? What would you like it to achieve?

As long as our fans love it that’s it right there. Of course we want it to go into the mainstream, go to the top of the charts and be a big album. That’s gravy for us. We do it for our fans and if it catches on then that’s great too. As long as our fans love it and respond well to it we’re good.

Have you got time to fit anything else in this year?

We’ll see. We’re going to do some performances in the fall and TV performances before getting ready to do an overseas tour. Hopefully we’ll be in the UK before you know it.

Do you have any plans for any more solo material?

Yes! I don’t know exactly when because 10 is coming out and we’re touring with it. I’m trying to find a spot to fit it in where it doesn’t feel awkward (laughs). I did a tour myself with my last solo album and it was a lot of fun. I’ve been dying to do it in the UK and do a show but it’s just finding the time. Maybe after I do another solo album maybe I’ll do a show in the UK. It’s always fun to go over there and perform.

New Kids on the Block’s new album 10 is available now.
