KID'S STUFF: BOYS BACK FOR BLOCK BUSTER
10th July 2008

BOYBAND legends New Kids On The Block have unveiled plans for a full UK tour and comeback album.

I was one of a handful of journalists granted a private chat with the pop dons at their comeback press conference in the German city of Munich.

And I am pleased to report that Donnie Wahlberg, 38, Danny Wood, 39, Joey McIntyre, 35, Jordan, 37, and brother Jon Knight, 38, are sounding brilliant, musically.

And personality-wise they are as charming, funny and sweet as my childhood dreams led me to believe.

Donnie revealed that the reunion came about after he heard a demo of the song Click, Click, Click – now on the lads’ new album.

It prompted him to get in touch with his old bandmates about returning to the studio.

He said: “It’s not like we fell off the face of the earth.

“We just collectively decided to stop working together, so coming back is a very natural thing. We experienced something magic together.”

The lads are now gearing up to release their first single Summertime on September 1, with an album of entirely new material following a week later.

In addition, they will tour America this autumn before reaching the UK, including London’s 02 Arena, in January.

The single will be their first since 1994, but despite the time lapse the gang were adamant they wouldn’t change the “Kids” to “Men”.

Joey told me: “We’re kids at heart. What’s in a name?”

Collaborations with Ne-Yo, 26, and Pussycat Dolls have given their sound a modern twist, but they say they’re not trying to break the mould with their new tunes.

Jordan explained: “We don’t feel we have to do a ground-breaking piece of art for everybody to say: ‘Whoa, they’re deep.’

“We are a boyband, and we do have girl fans and we like showing off and having fun. If it’s not
broke...”

And they are not back on the block because of Take That.

Jon insisted: “I couldn’t tell you what song they sang, or what they look like.”

Manbands at dawn: can’t wait.
